' ,; . t.i ; t X i. ^ x t Official Record Showing Ihe Facts,., t of the Scandal. Silas A. Holcomb, while governor of th*> state, not only accepted an uncon-. Btitutional appropriation for the pay ment of his private Ivaise rent, but hv the use of padded vouchers he took from the state treasury almost double the amount of money that tho house rent actually cost. It takes no argument to substantiate this. Tho records are the best evidence. When the legislature of 1898 made a house-rent appropriation for Governor Crounse, the last Republican governor, it was promptly vetoed. Oronnso in his message declared it unconstitutional and said tlm legislature had no power to increase the salary or perquisites of any state officer. Governor Holcomb bad no such re gard for the constitution or tho law. He regarded the law as "a faroo and a sham,” as his sworn testimony later dis closed. He was glad to take the house rent appropriation, and he intended to make ns much as possible out of it. The records show that for the first six months after the appropriation was available in 1895, Holcomb lived in a house belonging to A. O. Crandall. There is no evidence of tho actual amount jKiid Crandall for the rent, but thi' vouchers drawn show that for each quarter tin governor drew 1180 in ad- j vauce. He had Crandall sign the vouchers. On tlio 1st of October Holcomb rented a house from Mrs. Gould at the rate of f »0 per month. And yet the records show that for the quarter ending Jau. 1, j 1896, lie drew in advance $180 for J ‘•house rent.” Tho date of this voucher is Sept. 80, 1895. The next voucher drawn was on March 8, lsiG, when Holcomb took $950 nil iu a lump, the voucher saying it was for “house rent,” but did not say what period of time it covered. This was the cn-io with all future vouchers, un adroit effort having been made to cover up the misappropriation or steal. The record of all the vouchers drawn, as shown by the books iu the auditor's office is as follows: MayS, 1895.$180.00 July 11, 1 . J80.00 P'upt. ;to, j . ISO <)0 March 8, 1,890. 850.00 Dec, til, lHOiJ.900.00 Aug. 7, 1 - >7. 1SJO.OO Dec. 24, 1897. 860.00 May SO, 1*98. sjfio.no Aug. 8, 1898. 100.00 Dec. 10, 1898.290 ,U| Jan. 0, 1899 . KJ.JO $8,809.:!') Governor liolcomb deliberately mis appropriated and put iu his jss'ket each mouth u little over $19. All this in spite of tho fact the appropriation is for a ci rt ti amount for house rent, “or so ' uini'h then fas may bo necessary.” No quibble will justify the steal. The state officials now admit the wrong, and to prevent the vouchors from being in spected by tho public, the auditor has removed them from their usual places with the other vouchers in the vault, uid has the. i concealed at the present time iu Deputy Pool’s desk. A good way to pr wo this is to go and ask to ice them. The sworn evidence given by Mrs, Gould shows how much was paid for tho house wlueh Holcomb rented of her ou the 1st of October, 1895, and which lie still occupies. Thh house-rent fraud is only oue of the many reprehensible deals entered into by this “politician for spoils only." He is not At for the supreme liciich, and should be repudi ated at the polls. Mr. Hryfill's Political Morale. Some time ago the Hon. J. Sterling Morton made the public assertion that With >m .1. Bryan had said “it is the money that in in the office and not the honor that attracts me.” Such a remark from Mr. Bryan could noth' regarded as a probability by the e who believe him to be a leader with high moral standards and honorable purpose. The charge having been made by so prominent a citizen as Mr. Morion, on the other hand, created much comment. Mr. Bryan’s friends r fnsi d to believe Mr. Morton and rig orously denounced him for making such a false accusation against their idol. Finally, on Sept. 2d. Mr. Bryan, when ut his home in Lincoln, was in terviewed on the subject and he denied ever having gii'-ii expression to such an utterance und added that whatever Mr. Morton might say was unworthy of emlem i. It was then “up to” Mr. Morton. Accordingly in the issue of h. paper, The Conservative, of Oct. 12th, lie published a facsimile letter re ceivod by him from Mr. Bryan in wh h the language quoted is found. A photographic reproduction of the let ter leaves no doubt as to whether Mr. Bryan did or did not make use of such language. The ile ision is in Mr. Mor ton’s favor. Friends of Mr. Bryan will offer the excuse that the letter is ten years old, that he was, when he wrote it, much younger than now and that, if such language and sentiment be objection abb-, the transgression has been out lawed. If this lenient view of the case be granted the fact still remains that Mr. Bryan was, on Sept. 2flth, 1899, at tie- zenith of his powers and perhaps of his fame, and how, therefore, will he Is* excused from denying the utterance? Obviously Mr. Bryan’s political op ponents have too generously conceded the sincerity of his purposes, the in tegrity of his character. Mr. Morton has not convicted him of any greater defection from the straight path of rec titude than lie purposely and publicly made in 189ti, when, on his tail-end campaign, lie advised voters to wear gold badges and vote for silver. This endorsement of hyjKX-risy anil deception was certainly as unbecoming a presi dential camlidato as anything Mr. Mor ton has proven against him or of which he stands self-convicted. If “a vote for Holcomb is a vote for Bryan” is to bo adopted as the fusion sliibbok-th this year in Nebraska, then these things are to be legitimately con sidered along with the Holcomb “cigar box” settlement with Defaulting Treas urer Bartley, iho house-rent record and ballot-fraud connection. Mr. Bryan profiting by his eorrea potidenoe with J. Stirling Morton, should not forget tint jKMtiK-ript, "burn thin letter."
