NEW YORK. May . The atock market went through many variations of specula tive temper today and howe4 a feeling of hesitation In the retention of any of It moods until the' firmness of the final advance. Business In London had got weil tinder way before the opening here, glvlnp time to demonstrate the feeling of confidence there tn the ability to resist the depression of the king of Kngland's death. The calm ness of tha London financial markets waa due partly to the opinion formed over the Sunday Interval that something like a truce would b adopted In the bitter poli tical eon tee t being waged over consti tutional iueatlons affecting the British government. A postponement of the struggle lnvoled. It was felt, would do I much to bring securities to tha financial markets, 1-arge Importance waa attached to thai government report on ihe May 1 condition of the wheat crop as a factor in shaping opinions. The first reaction In Block from the reflected London strength wes due to advance fenrs of a peer report. Selling bv western wire houses on that account wiped out about all the opening gains. Quick changes followed the actual publication. Hreat Importance was attached to the April Improvement in condition ' reported, In view of the highly dangerous weather condition which have existed. The p,t pltlous planting condition for spring wh'at also. s well a the opportunity for re planting of abandoned winter wheat acreage and subsequent Improvement of the ciop before harvest, Inclined to a favorable speculative view of the outlook, In spite of tha decrease of about ,000.000 bushel In the present Indicated yield of winter wheat compared with tha aotual crop last year. Contrary movements were shown In some prominent Individual stocks. St. Taul suf fered from tha withholding of definite of ficial announcement of the bonrl sale In Pari, the result being to arou fears of a hitch In the business. Southern Psclfio, on the other hand, was aggresslvefy trong from the revival of reports of an Intended extra distribution to stockholders of the oil assets of the company. The unfas- able copper Rtattatlc for April had been abundantly foreseen and there was a dis position to look on them as past influences. Reports of some recent large sale of the metal at the price concession were of more effect. The strong tone of A malt ganiated Cupper was an Influence In the lato rally In thewhole market.
