MARCHAND WITH ROCK ISLAND Tomer Attonsv for Commerce Commiuio Cars Transportation Bic Question. RAILROADS ' WANT TO SERVE PUBUC tieelares Popular Aataanalam ta Cor. aoratloaa Thin of Past, Eaeept with Drmaa-oa-ae or ( lllUlot, J. T. Mart-hand, for svontefn ynars an attorney for tha Interstate Commarca com BilsKlon, but now the apnclal representative of President Wlnchell of the Rock lalalid line, visited local Rock Ialand offlctala mondajr. Mr. . Marchand will be remem bered aa the representative of the Inter state Commerce commission In Ita Important hearing In the Union raclnc coal land cases In Omaha last fall and subsequently. Salt Lake and Denver, which hearing have re sulted In the restoration of vaat tracts of coal lands to the government. Mr. March and resigned from the eervleee of the com mission to accept more lucrative work and became associated with President Wlnohell early In the present year. "My associations with the Interstate Commerce commission were always the most pleasant and I shall alwaya cherish my' close relations with the members of the commission aa on of the most pleaaant periods of my life," said Mr. Marchafd. "In leaving the work of the commission ' I felt It a duty I owed myself to enter the broader publlo field of my profession, tha Uw. Leading; Qaestlnn af tha Day. "The transportation Question Is possibly tha leading one of our commercial Interests today. Just now It if a physical question with the railroads. The reaources of tha country have developed with auch colossal at rldos that tha railroads have hardly been able to keep abreast with them. Business has Increased, but railway mileage has not. Bat thla condition la Improving rapidly. It ta not ao jnuch the question of car shortage as It Is the general reaources of the rail roads. The tremendous Increase In traffic )aa had to be met with tha facilities the roads have at hand. Orders for railway -material that have been placed and paid for for months are only now being sup plied. But the conditions are rapidly Im proving and the toads will be able to meet the emergency .even though they, do have to do a two-track business on a single track. Want to Supply Their Needs. "My business as the special representative of President Wlnehell la to go about the country and get In touch with our patrons and see what they need and what we can An for them. We want to hear fhelr com plaints and wants and meet with, talk and , advise together for the betterment of all conditions. I think all the roads want to do this. All that a railroad has to sell Is transportation and we want to sell Just as much of that as we can.. And to do that we must get next to our friends and find out how we can best serve them. . "There is a mistaken notion as to the xtent that publlo opinion Is antagonistic to the railways. Antagonism to. corpora . tlona, like all extremes to which the pub lic at tlmea goea, has spent Its force ex cept with the demagogue and agitator. Those whose opinions are worthy of con sideration In the determination of .matters Important to the publlo welfare have come to a realisation that the railways and the people are commercially and socially parts of one great family, with Interdependent Interests, so that to hurt or impair the credit or standing of any of . Its members or set of members, la a hurtful Influence all around. Statesman Secklnar Fame. The statesman seeking fame through tha - enactment of laws Inimical to railway cor pora tl cms haa In most Inatances done so from Ignorance of conditions. Had he known that In the last . few years every item In the expense of building and opera ting railways haa Increaaed from' 10 to 100 per cent, the pay rolls alone having more than doubled In ten years, he would have gone alower in enactmenta reducing reve nues and Increasing taxation. The only commodity I know of. If I may use the ex pression, which has not Increased In cast, haa been 'transportation.' And transport! tton Is all that the railways have for sale. While, aa I have said, everything which goea with the cost of transportation haa In creased. I believe the public la getting a clearer Idea of these mattera and that the hysterical prejudice against railways (a fast dying out." art wars ' la Bascatent 01s Start Irfrioer tort la 014 Start BaMSMBt from tha EXTRA SPECIALS Greatest Sale Ever EeSd BY TIIE GREATEST STORE New Lota Brought Forward Every Da.y From Our GreaJ $100,000 Purchase Our New York buyer bought this merchandise at actually 25 per cent to CO per cent below regular prices.
