Totals 239 CATTLE There was nothing ot any oon- seouanca dolnsr In tha market, for, whlla there were a few cattle In tha yards, there was not enough of any one thing to maae any teat of values, Tbe recelpu for the week show a moderate gain over last week and a heavy gain over a year ago, as will be noted from the sales st the head of the column. Wblls tbe receipts were liberal, they would have been non too large under ordinary oondltlona, aa th consuming de mand lor meat prouucia commutes - yu good and packers could easily dispose of all tha cattle coming to market. The only trouble has been to secure refrigerator cars In which to ship th meat from the packing houses. . . During tha first two days of th ween the market was in very satisfactory condi tion, receipts, although large, being readily absorbed by local packers. Wednesday's market also opened steady, but later on, owing to th fact that packers found them selves without shipping facilities, some of the buyers were withdrawn from th mar ket. This narrowed the competition down and enabled th on or two buyer who could still talis on more cattle to depress prices to suit their own Ideas. Tha result was that tiie market on Wednesday after noon closed very alow and decidedly lower. On Thursday the full meaning of th short age of refrigerator car became well under stood. Packers not only Mad thsir houses full of meat, but a large number of catUe which they had been unable to kill out and non of them were In need of any addi tional supplies. The result was that th few buyers who were willing to take th oattl at all bad things very much their own way and th market became thor oughly damuralined. Price on Thursday were anywhere from 26c to 60c lower on ths general run of killing cattle, steers, enws and heifers. wltX the trade extremely dull even at th decline. It was not merely a mutter of price, but rather more a ques tion of being able to take the cattle at any &nco. It waa. In fact, the worst demoral ;ed market experienced at this point tn a grei4 wlille. Friday's receipts fortunately were Ils-ht. but the demand was no better and prices certainly no higher. As a re sult the market at tne cioe oi me wrei cannot be quoted other than 25ooc lower than on week ago. Tha country' would do well to hold back cattle until th shortage In refrigerator cara Is relieved and until th packets have been riven an oDDOrlunlty to clear out their cooler. There is no necessity for any hurry In marketing cattle, as the severe break this week la due entirely, as noted above, to tha Inability of packers to get their meat Droducla to market. There Is no lack of demand for tha meat and there Is no question but what as soon as the car shortage Is relieved the demand for cattle will b brisk, witn a natural raise u vlila. Blockers and feeders sold very well dur ing th first part of the week. On Tuesday the demand was exceptionally gooa and prices wer a high as they have been any time this year. During the latter half af the weeK, owing to lue nemursineu in ditlon ot the market on fat cattle, th trade on feeder was naturally alow and dull, witn an easing on in values.
