NEW TORTC, Fab. . The stock market
showed a heavy tone from the outset today
and weakened decidedly after the appear
ance of tha bank statement. This esrly
check to the recovery set in late in the
middle of tha week and was accepted as
a bad augury for tha renewal of the ad
vance and aa evidence that covering by
over-extended shorts had been principally
rwixmsiDie ror tne rany.
The decrease of over ll2.Ono.ono In the cash
holdings of tha banka la difficult to traoe
to any known destination. The known
movements of currency since tha last bank
statement accounted for about l3.0(-0.("i.
It Is probable that the subtressury'a with
drawal or deposits late last week figured
in this week's averaaes of the banka In
stead of last week's, but a large discrep
ancy would still remain to be accounted
tor. The loan expansion on the other hand.
.suea 10 snow tna expected errect ot tne
large transactions of the week in the pay
ment of New Tork City bonds, subscrip
tions and the taklna- ud of a number of
railroad note Issues. The hardening of the
call money market resterdav Is einlalned
by the showing ot the banka The time
money today was reported firm and un
usually active for a Saturday In sympathy
with tha iisa In call loan rates. Rterllna
exchange ratee were not affected today.
Large arrivals of gold are expected in the
London market on Monday and added in
terest will be taken In the success of busi
ness In New York accounts. Discounts In
London rose today. Foreign takings of
the note issues being made by the railroad
corn pan lea are establishing foreign credits
for New York account and New York's
ability to draw gold at this time la counted
on. Reports by mercantile agencies of
some quieting df spring demand and re
tarding of collections were given considera
tion, although the tendency attributed to
weather conditions principally. Tbe mar

It is th4 duty of the Public Officials, when approv
ing Bonds for Fiduciaries, Public Officers or Con

of a Surety Company, In order to ascertain whether a
Company could pay any claim that might be made
against it under the bond.
Bank Officers and Managers ot Corporations should

CATTLE There was nothing ot any oon-
seouanca dolnsr In tha market, for, whlla
there were a few cattle In tha yards, there
was not enough of any one thing to maae
any teat of values, Tbe recelpu for the
week show a moderate gain over last week
and a heavy gain over a year ago, as will
be noted from the sales st the head of the
column. Wblls tbe receipts were liberal,
they would have been non too large under
ordinary oondltlona, aa th consuming de
mand lor meat prouucia commutes - yu
good and packers could easily dispose of
all tha cattle coming to market. The only
trouble has been to secure refrigerator cars
In which to ship th meat from the packing
houses. . .
During tha first two days of th ween
the market was in very satisfactory condi
tion, receipts, although large, being readily
absorbed by local packers. Wednesday's
market also opened steady, but later on,
owing to th fact that packers found them
selves without shipping facilities, some of
the buyers were withdrawn from th mar
ket. This narrowed the competition down
and enabled th on or two buyer who
could still talis on more cattle to depress
prices to suit their own Ideas. Tha result
was that tiie market on Wednesday after
noon closed very alow and decidedly lower.
On Thursday the full meaning of th short
age of refrigerator car became well under
stood. Packers not only Mad thsir houses
full of meat, but a large number of catUe
which they had been unable to kill out and
non of them were In need of any addi
tional supplies. The result was that th
few buyers who were willing to take th
oattl at all bad things very much their
own way and th market became thor
oughly damuralined. Price on Thursday
were anywhere from 26c to 60c lower on
ths general run of killing cattle, steers,
enws and heifers. wltX the trade extremely
dull even at th decline. It was not merely
a mutter of price, but rather more a ques
tion of being able to take the cattle at any
&nco. It waa. In fact, the worst demoral
;ed market experienced at this point tn a
grei4 wlille. Friday's receipts fortunately
were Ils-ht. but the demand was no better
and prices certainly no higher. As a re
sult the market at tne cioe oi me wrei
cannot be quoted other than 25ooc lower
than on week ago.
Tha country' would do well to hold back
cattle until th shortage In refrigerator
cara Is relieved and until th packets have
been riven an oDDOrlunlty to clear out
their cooler. There is no necessity for any
hurry In marketing cattle, as the severe
break this week la due entirely, as noted
above, to tha Inability of packers to get
their meat Droducla to market. There Is
no lack of demand for tha meat and there
Is no question but what as soon as the car
shortage Is relieved the demand for cattle
will b brisk, witn a natural raise u
vlila.
Blockers and feeders sold very well dur
ing th first part of the week. On Tuesday
the demand was exceptionally gooa and
prices wer a high as they have been any
time this year. During the latter half af
the weeK, owing to lue nemursineu in
ditlon ot the market on fat cattle, th
trade on feeder was naturally alow and
dull, witn an easing on in values.

liberal gain ever last week and over a year
ago. Bheep receipts have been running
very liberal for the last month, or mors
so that there has been a sain of over
20,000 sine January 1 as compared with a
year ago.
ini market on sheen has been In vtt
satisfactory condition this week. Tha de-
mana nas been good, so that desirable fat
earungs), wethers and awes have bean
ree sellers with prices practically steady
from day to day. At the close of the
week the market is lust about wtasr It was
one week ago.
The only difficulty experienced by sellers
has been In connection with lambs. Aa
noted yesterday ths Chicago lamb market
has been breiUtlng down quit rapidly this
wees uncier tne influence or a lower mut
ton market and liberal receipts. In sym
pathy with th decline at that point lambs
were given a lower tendency her and at
ths doss ths market la uVg25o lower. Oood
lambs are not to exoeed 26a lower, the
heaviest decline being on tha medium grades
wnicn are not so much, sought alter by
packers.
The trad as a who! has been reasonably
satisfactory all the week, especially as com
pared with other selling points, Th de
cline on lambs Is not regarded as a serious
matter, out more in the nature of a tem
porary condition. Chicago Is advising light
shipments of lambs until the mutton mar
ket improves. As a rule sheep men ara
very - confident of the future. Regular
operators on the market ar without ex
ception advising their friends In tha country
io oe in no nurry about snipping, nut to
hold everything back until It Is thoroughly
ripe for market
