Snme Old 81 } lo Ucmntni 111 Publli Fn or. The wedding ring plays ns Important i part In the modern nuptial ceremony oa th minister , or license. Thcro seems to b but ono correct style for this courjtry , litho the matter of a wedding ring , and that I ono bearing the name of a famous jeweler This hoop was brought out twenty-flv years ago. And from Its first appearance 1 has been steadily winning Its way oa leade till today It stands alone. It Is a perfect ! ; plain band with outer surface oval and innc flat. It Is made of twenty-two karat , whlcl Is deemed the moat serviceable. The mtwl popular ring la of medium slze- a little less than a quarter of an Inch wide though In effect much narrower because o the oval edges. Unless the buyer has eom preference for n very narrow or very broai band ho la advised to take a ten penny iv eight ring , this being the regulatloi weight for tbo medium size * . It costs $10 The tiny narrow rings have neve been popular , for In order to wear at nl well the ring must be so deep that It cut Into the other fingers and Is decidedly un comfortable. So , too , nro the cxtremel : wide rings which often make a callus Jus between the band and the edge of the rlni on the Inner side of the ring finger. Do sides with some women these broad band sweat the finger , causing It to swell. In London ono finds a style of weddlnt ring on sale which Is seldom seen tn thi , country. It Is custom made and is the en tlrely round ring. But , like the narrov hoop , Us difficulty lies In Us neccssar ; thickness , which makes the wearing of i well fitting glove Impossible. The Inscription generally ordered for wed ding rings seems to bo the Initials of thi groom and bride , connected by the won "to. " A large majority add the date ti the wedding day In abbreviation , as "Sept 6'97 , " while many have engraved the dat only , and still others no Inscription what ever. If an Englishman wears a wedding ring h Is at once set down as a widower , thi wearing of the deceased wife's weddlni ring being a custom In England , with th bereaved husbands. In Germany there Is a custom of doubl ring ceremonies , In which the groom , a well as the bride , is wedded and endowei with a band. These rings are always exac duplicates , except In finger size. This fash Ion Is becoming quite popular In this coun try. But In style tbo wedding ring Is th same as our mothers wore. The skirt models cut with five or seve gores gain rather than lose In favor. Th five gored shape has a rather wide aid breadth. The popularity of the ceven-plec suit Is largely duo to the fact that It Is moderate style neither too full nor to scant In breadths and also to Us genera contour and effect. It proves alike becomln to stout aa to slender figures , to wome : tall or short , and Is an excellent model fo either silk or wool material. MARRIAGE AFTER DIVORCE The Burning Question to Oomo Bcforo the Episcopal Ohurch Convention , OPPOSITION TO LEGAL SEPARATION Prevention of MnrrlnKC of Kltlior Pnrty to 11 IIUoicv nurliiK ( lie Lite of ttic Other AnifiiilliiK the TWimo of ( lie Clinrclii The general convention of the Episcopal church , which meets In Washington next Wednesday , Is regarded ns ono of the most important In the history of that denomina tion. The revision of the constitution and canons of the church , which has been uudr consideration for several years , will come LP for action Many of the chances pro posed will provoke controversy and will liiR out a large attendance. The con\ontlon Is made up of two houses ; the house of bishops , composed of about sixty bishops , and the house of deputies , which Is composed of four clerical and four lay delegates from each diocese. The list of clerical delocates to the con vention contains the names of nearly nil the leading ministers of the Episcopal church , while that of the lay delegates shows many names prominent lu the world of finance and politics. Among those who arc ex pected to attend arc ex-Senator Gcorfio r , Edmunds of Vermont , now of Philadelphia , J. Plerpout Morgan of New York , Henry 13 , Plerrepont of Brookljn , John R. Triplet ! of Missouri and David B. Lyman of Lo Grange , III. The house of bishops will bo presided ovci by Ut. Rev. John Williams , bishop ol Connecticut , who Is the senior bishop In date of consecration. All the bishops will nttcnO the convention. The sessions of the house of bishops will be held behind closed doors , but these of the house of deputies will be open to the general public. A correspondent of the New York Sue touches upon a few of the leading question ! which the convention Is to consider. 01 these < the most Important , says the corre spondent , will bo the proposition to rcvlbt the canon on marriage and divorce so ns te make It Impossible for a clergyman of tin Protestant Episcopal church to marry clthei party to a divorce. Over this canon It li oxpeotcd the most protracted debate of th < convention will tnko place. There Is nt doubt that the sentiment In the Eplscopn church , at least among 'tho ' clergy , I : strongly In favor of the church setting Its face firmly against divorce. An evidence o this Is the circulation of a petition to thi convention requesting that It adopt semi stringent rule for that purpose , which hai already received the signatures of abou' ' 2,000 of the clergy. The proposition tc adopt a stringent canon will recelvo the un divided support of the high church minis ters and finds many supporters among thi low church ministers. The canon whlcl applies to the marrlngo of divorced person ! Is ns follows : "Canon 13 , under title 2 , section 2. N < minister , knowingly , after duo Inquiry , shal solemnize the marriage of any person wb < has a divorced husband or wife still living If such husband or w Ifo has been put avva ; for nny cause arising nfter marriage , bu this canon shall not bo held to apply to thi Innocent party In a divorce for the cause o adultery or to parties once divorced soeklni to bo united again. " AVorU of the CommUnlon , In making Its report , which will be pro sentcd to the general convention , the join commission on the revision of the constl- tion and canons will recommend that thi following canon shall bo adopted In lieu o the ono now In force : "No minister of thli church shall solemnize the marriage o either patty to a divorce during the life o the other party. " The joint commission which consldere < this question during the last three yean was composed of Dlshop Donne of Albany Bishop Dudley of Kentucky , Dlshop Me Laren of Chicago , Bishop Potter of Nev York , Bishop Paret of Maiyland and Blsbo ] Burgess of Qulncy ; Rev. Eugene A. Hoff man , Kev. James S. Stone , Rev. Hall Harrl son , Rev. P. P. Davenport , Rev. J. Houstoi Eccloston and Rev. William R. Hunting ton , and Messrs. W. II. LIghtner , B. G Bradford , F. D. Swnyno , C. G. Saundcrs , J A. Beal , F. H. Mltler and W. S. Laldley , A might have been expected In a commlssloi of this size , and representing so man ; shades of opinions , the commission couh not agree on the canon regarding the mar rlago of divorced persons. The dissenter from the report of the commission , In si far as It deals with this subject , are lei by no less a person than Bishop H. C. Potte of New York , who Is ably seconded by Rev J. II. Eccleston of Baltimore , W. H. Light ner of St. Paul , Mr. Prank H. Miller o Georgia , and Rev. William H. Huntlngton o New York. These clergymen wl/1 presen to the convention a minority report on thi ; subject , recommending that section 3 o canon 34 of the revised canon , as pro posed by the joint commlttoe , shall read : "No minister of this church shall solem nlze the marriage of nny person who ha a divorced husband or wife living. Thi shall not apply to the Innocent party In i divorce obtained for the cause of adulter ; on his or her filing with the minister , a evidence of such Innocence , a ! < ; ally ccr tided transcript of the record , showing i final judgment or decree of a court o record having jurisdiction on the sUbjec matter , awarding him or her a divorce i vlnculo matrlmonll on the grounds o adultery. " Rev. Hall Harrison dissents from th. . entire canon as proposed by the Joint com mission , with the exception of paragraph of section 2 , which requires that the mar rlago shall be reported and the record slgnei by at least two witnesses. Rev. C. A L. Richards dlssenta from the proposei canon of marriage , section 1 , which deal with degrees of consanguinity , and sectloi 3 , which provides against the marriage o divorced persons. Bishop Burgess o Qulncy and Mr. W. S. Laldley also dlssen from the recommendation of the adoption o the section of canon 31 which forbids th marriage of divorced people. Other CliiuiKC * 1'roiionrd. The section which forbids the marriage o divorced persons Is not the only Importan change proposed In the canon now regulat Ing marriage , but the other changes ar less Important and will bo accepted by th convention without considerable debate Canon 13 of the Digest , which relates t marrlago and divorce , has four prlnclpa sections. The first reads : "If any person bo joined together otherwise than as God' word doth allow , the marriage la not lawful The coramltteo on the revision of the canon will recommend the substitution for thi section of the following : "No minister shal solemnlzo a marriage the parties to vvhlc arc within the degrees of consanguinity an affinity defined In the eighteenth chapta of the book of Leviticus. " Canon 13 , section 2 , provides that divorce people shall not bo married by a mlnlstei except In the case of an Innocent part In a divorce for the cause of adultery , o parties once divorced seeking to bo unite again. This section Is to be replaced b section 3 of the revised canon 31 , forblddln the marriage of either party to a dlvorc during the life of the other party. In net tlon 3 of canon 13 It Is provided that th minister ehall refer cases to the blsho IN hero ho has reasonable cause to doub that parties desiring baptism , conflrmatlo or communion have be-on married improper ! according to the church , but with the provla , hat no minister shall , In any case , refuse ho sacraments 'to nny penitent person In mmlnent danger of death. The substitute 'or this section which will bo presented by bo joint commission proposes a sweeping change. The now provision Is canon 35 , and reads : ' No person married otherwise than AH the discipline of this church allows shall be admitted to holy baptism or to confirmation or to receive the holy communion without ho written direction of the bishop , given upon application , and nfter duo Investigation of the facts. " In another canon ( section 2 of canon 36) ) : ho proviso regarding the administration of .ho sacraments Is Inserted. The Joint com- nlsslon will recommend the adoption of the following new provisions regarding mar riages. "Canon 31 , Sec. 2 , Par. 1. It shall bo the duty of ministers to admonish the people from time to time that the church discoun tenances clandestine marriages. "Par. 2. No minister shall solemnize the marilnzo of any person who Is a minor under the law of the place of the marriage , unless the parent or guardian Is present , or shall have given a written consent to the marriage , or Is n permanent resident in a foreign country. "Par. 3. No minister shall solemnize n marriage except In the presence of two wit nesses , himself or the witnesses being per sonally acquainted with the parties. " Alia of IIlKlt Churchmen. The question of marrlngo nnd divorce anil the attitude the church should tnko toward divorced persons who wish to marry again has been up before many general conven tions. The attitude of the Episcopal church has alvvajs been strongly against divorce , and particularly against the marrlago ol divorced persons The Catholic church takes a broader ground of positively declining tc recognize such nn Institution ns divorce , and this Is the end for which the hl li ihurch Episcopalians are aiming. The time Is not , however , deemed propitious for sucl a radical step , and the proposition to for bid the marrlngo of either party to n dl- voice Is as far as the high church can gc at present. As early as the year 1009 It was enacted by the church authorities of England that n Christian might never marry n. divorced woman. Down to 1837 It was necessary thai a private act of Parliament should bo passed In order that a dlvorco could be obtained , In 1S57 the state took action looking to ward the granting of divorces by the courts without the Interposition of Parliament , bul this action has not been sanctioned by the Church of England. This has brought aboul a peculiar state of affairs In England and has led to considerable confusion. The church there forbids the uiarrlage of clthei party to a divorce , save In the case of ar Innocent party to the divorce for the cause of adultery. But as the state permits the marrlago of divorced parties , the minister ! of the Church of England were put In r hole. As ministers of the church they were forbidden to marry these persons , but ns the church Is allied to the state nnd to n cortalr. extent subject to It , a number of them be lieved It their civil duty to perform sucl mirringos nnd performed them In vlolatlor of the canonical law. The agitation ovoi this question has attracted a great deal ol attention during the last few years , nnd li looked upon ns being one of the most pow erful causes which will lend to a disestab lishment of the , Church of England. ClmiiKiiiK the Nniue. Another question which will come befor < the convention Is that of changing the nami of the church. It Is held by the hlgl churchmen that the name Protestant Epis copal , as given above , does not really indl cato what the church purports to be. Thli name , they eay , makes It appear that thi Protestant Episcopal church. Is a sect 01 denomination , like the Methodists or Pres byterians , while It Is really the Holy Catho lic church , or a part of the Holy Catholli church. In direct line , with continuity fron the Apostles , just as the Roman Catholli church and the Greek Catholic church. Ac cordlngly they suggest that It shall In thi future to known ns the American Catholli church. They realize , however , that thli title might bring about some confusion be tween the Roman Catholic church In thli country , which Is every day becoming mon and more distinctly American. The propo sltlon Is , therefore , put out that the Pro testant Episcopal church bo hereafter knowi simply aa the "Church In America. " Thli title will undoubtedly be thought presump tuous by other denominations , but na thi high churchmen hold to the theory tha the church has never changed from the tlmi of the Apostles , and that It Is a part o the Holy Catholic church , It Is therefon a part of the church that Is , the enl < church which dates back to the Apostles , am which has preserved Intact the teachings o the Apostles nccordlng to the word of God and it Is consequently perfectly Just nn < proper that It should have the tltlo of "Thi Church , " the words "In America" belni added to distinguish it from the Romai Catholic church , the Greek church , nnd thi Church of England. There Is another factor to bo conslderec In the discussion of this question whlcl promises to enter largely Into tbo debati upon the proposition to change the nami of the church , should the proposition hi presented to the convention as outline ) above. The subject of missions will com up before the convention for discussion , am will undoubtedly occupy a great deal of thi tlmo devoted to debate. Tha acquisition o Hawaii and Porto Rico , to say nothing o Manila and possibly the Philippines , opani up a new Jurisdiction that will require thi care of the Episcopal church. In addltloi to looking after the Interests nnd the re llglous welfare of the people of these Is lands , It Is the Intention of the comlni convention to agitate the subject of mis slons and to prepare for a grand mlsslonar ; movement all along the line. The genera secretary of the board of missions , Dr. Lang ford , died ono year ago , and a proposltloi will bo made to change the character of thi work by selecting a. number of secrotarle : and dividing and systematizing the entln work of missions. The convention select certain days on which to sit as a board o missions , and on these dajs It will discus ; these questions. MIxHlonnry Trouble * . Serious thinker's in the church nro o the opinion that in such a movement th name "Tho Protestant Episcopal Church o tbo United States of America" wouli stand seriously In the way of the organlza tlon of dioceses or missionary Jurisdiction In the Catholic countries of South America The Episcopal church has heretofore takei the broad ground that , as the Roma : church Is but another branch of the tru th'urcli , It was not proper to establish mis slonary jurisdictions In South America because cause of the ecumenical canon that n bishop should Invade the jurisdiction o another bishop. Tbo church has acted upo the assumption that when the various re publics of South America obtained thcl Independence from Spain the church In eac ; republic acquired , or , It may bo said , re talncd , exclusive jurisdiction In such re public. It Is now argued , however , tha during the 300 years which the Catholl church has been established In these coun tries It has failed Its mission , and that th tlmo has come for the Episcopal church t enter the field. It Is therefore dcslrabl that the name bo changed so that bishop In these countilcB will not bo bishops c the "Protestant Episcopal Church In th United States of America , " but bishops c "Tho Church In America. " The question will come up over the admla Blon of Hawaii as a diocese of the Eplsco pal church. The Church of England ha established a missionary jurisdiction there with Blsnop Alfred Willis in charge. It li proposed to absorb this diocese by transfer ring It from the Anglican church to th ( American church. V > ith the consent ol Bishop Willis nnd the Honolulu mission It would only require the creation of such a nUslonnry Jurisdiction to complete th ransfer. A precedent was established In the case of the present bishop of Vermont , who wan a priest of the diocese ot Oxford vhen elected to the episcopate ! nlso in the case of the present bishop of Now Hamp shire , who Is a British subject The Episcopalians In Brazil have sub * nltted n petition for the erection of a lloceso thcro nnd the consecration of a jlshop. Thcro will bo several mtsilonary bishops elected t this convention , among others the bishops of North Dakota , Wyom- ng and Idaho. It Is possible , but scarcely irolmhle , that n proposition looking to tha selection of a bishop ns primate , or nrch- Mshop , may bo presented to the conven- Inn As thcro appears to bo no necessity for such n distinct departure from the pres ent customs of the church , Inasmuch ns practically all the duties of a prlmato nro now performed by the bishop who presides over the convention , nnd who Is nlwaji the oldest bishop In point of consecration , It Is not believed that the subject of making an nrchblshop will came bcforo the conven tion.
