About fifteen miles east of Arapn * hoc , Neb , , on the line of the I ) , it At , railroad , pleasantly located is the llttlo town of Oxford , Ita citizens have been -working nw y in their own quiet way and the namu of the town is not aa widely known as seine that nro in reality of less importance. It is the conterof a wealthy agricultural district and though the crops in the past have not been the beet they nro abundant this year nnd promise to give the town a genuine boom , Now parties nro coming in and engaging in business. There nro grain buyers in the town who promise to buy up all the farmers can bring in , All this predicts a sub stantial and lasting growth. Uohiml this there is a power that ns yet 1ms not been felt , but is hkoly to break forth at nny time. The Lincoln land company has bought up the most of the land in the vicinity , nnd n large plat has been laid _ out into village lots. It is evident Urn' they intend giving the tonn som kind of n boom which will sell thcsi lots , or they never would hnvo gonoto the expense of buying the land niuj laying them out. It is n matter o' conjecture what the boom will be Mnny nro confidant that the proponed cut-off from Hastings \\ill strike tlio town , although Arapahoe expects it , Ono thing is ccrtnin surveys hnvo beer made into Oxford us well ns Arapn huo. Oxford possesses n great ndvnntngc in its water power which is aufliciont to run very Inrgo mills. Katuro aocms to hnvo intended that the power should bo used ns there is a natural raco-wny already constructed , A flour nnd feed mill would do well at this point. The people in the vicinity are very nnxious to hnvo n woolen mill , and they promise all oncourngomcnt to any ono who would start a mill. No doubt n mnn understanding the busi ness nnd possessed of small capital would make n oed thing out of his investment to build such a mill , Wool is being produced in' the valley to quito an extent and the clip ia likely to bo greater each year. At piesont the wool is shipped east aud manufactured into cloth and then shipped back again. The man who buys the wool from the farmers pays a lower price for it on account of having to send it BO far , this is n losa to the grower. Again the merchant charges more per yard lor the cloth bccauso it has been brought from auch a distance and this cornea from the consumer or the original groworof the wool. At the same time the wool can bo manufactured into cloth just as well in the llajjublican Valley ns it can bo in New England. All that ia neces sary ia for some man with enterprise to make the experiment. To insure success the beginning must bo small until the people have become acquainted with the enterprise ) , and learn to have confidence in thn Re publican Valley nulls. Then as the demand increases let the capacity of the mill bo enlarged. "O , well ! ' " eaya one , "that will do well enough to talk , but where nro wo to got the operatives ? " The few that would bo required on the start could bo found any day and the number would swell in proportion to the busi ness. Build your mill and wo will guarantee the necessary operations. Captain Taylor , of Hastings , has been looking around the vicinity with the idea of engaging in an extensive stock business. E. E. AVildo ia running n general merchandise business , and lias a mo nopoly in the farmers trade , ns they all know where to obtafei the best quality of goods at the lowest prices. 11. A. Cress , an old typo , is run ning a saloon and making more money than ho over could at the casu , Couoideiuble building is going on in town and a great many of the older residents nro making improvements in the way of paint nnd general re pairs. A new hotel ia about to bo opened , and it ia hoped will supply a long-felt want. Altogether the town is in a very hopeful condition. A.
