Secondary stymies passing attack m r ail ueTensive DacKs control scrimmage By Jeff Griesch Staff Reporter Nebraska’s football team ended two-a-day practices with a scrimmage dominated by the Comhuskcr defen sive backs. The secondary frustrated the Huskcr quarterbacks throughout the scrim mage with blanket coverage high lighted by a spectacular interception late in the scrimmage by comcrback Kenny Wilhite. Huskcr secondary coach George Darlington said he was happy with the secondary’s performance. “Overall, we were pretty pleased with our performance and I think we arc developing quite well,” Darling ton said. Nebraska coach Tom Osborne was also impressed with the secondary’s performance. “Barron Miles has really come on and become a good player, (Lorenzo) Brinkley is playing better, (with Wilhite and comcrback John Recce) that gives you four kids at corner,” Osborne said. “Another guy is Mike Heins — he is probably 30 percent belter than he was a year ago. So what looked like it might be a real concern has become right now pretty good.” Darlington credits the secondary’s quick development to intense compe tition within the positions. “Competition enhances the ability to improve, and right now we have very few positions nailed down so we have good competition,” he said. Wilhite’s interception answered any questions remaining about the condi tion of his knee, which he injured against Kansas last season. The in jury forced him to miss the remainder of the season. “Wilhite’s knee is in great shape, and his recovery is really exceptional, considering other kids have taken two years to come back from similar inju ries,” Darlington said. Darlington said he had also been pleased with the examples and lead ership set by Wilhite, Heins and sen ior strong safety Steve Carmcr. “We have gotten tremendous lead ership from Kenny along with Mike Heins that has allowed the younger kids to improve more quickly,” he said.
