The first-string defense and of fense were matched throughout the scrimmage, and Osborne kept them on the field against each other as much as possible. “The defense was good enough, we didn’t gel very many big plays,” he said. “I would have liked to sec a little more pizazz offensively today than what we saw. We’ve got the elements of a good offense and I think we’ll gel it pul together.” Osborne said Grant — who had entered fall practice as a co-No. 1 with redshirt freshman Tony Veland — had become his first-string quar terback. Linebacker Trcv Alberts, who has been hampered by a hamstring in jury, and strong safety Ernie Beler, who suffers from a groin pull, were among the players missing. Senior quarterback Joel Cornwell also missed with a sore shoulder. Two-a-day practices are now over, and Osborne said he was satisfied with the progress the team has made. “I think we’ve done about all we can physically,” he said. “We really need to work hard the next two weeks to get refined offensively, the timing has got to get better. “I feel encouraged about the team because their attitude’s been good and I think defensively we could get better.” Scoring: Derek Brown 1 run. Gymnasts keep fit for season By Nick Hytrek Senior Reporter_ Editor’s Note: This is the first in a five-day series of stories updating five Cornhusker athletic programs and prog ress made during the summer. Tomorrow: Women’s basket ball. While Nebraska men’s gymnas tics coach Francis Allen was away at the Olympics this summer, his gym nasts were not at play. Allen, coach of the U.S. men’s team that competed in Barcelona, said his Nebraska athletes didn’t work as hard as they usually do, but they did get some good workouts in. ' “It was a pretty laid back sum mer,” Allen said. “This was probably the easiest summer ever. “Some summers they work their butts off going to competitions all summer.” Workouts were optional, Allen said, but attendance throughout the sum mer was high. “They had the option to come in and most came in,” he said. “The guys did a good job this summer.” The lack of quality gymnastics facilities in the country also added to the high attendance, Allen said. “In college gymnastics, the only place to train is at the campus,” Allen said. “The equipment at Nebraska is as good as you’ll find anywhere. You just can’t go anywhere and train.” Because of the Olympics, there was no Olympic Festival or other major meet for Comhusker gymnasts to compete in in the United states. However, two Huskers — Dennis Harrison and Richard Grace — com peted on a national team, which trav eled to a meet in Great Britain. There, the U.S. team Finished second to the British Olympic team in a four-team competition. That experience and work during the summer led to improvement, Allen said. “We’re prclly much set,” he said. “We’re in pretty good shape.” Nebraska finished second in last year’s NCAA championships in Lin coln, losing to Stanford. But most of the members of that team will be returning for another run at the title next spring. And the newest member of the team, Jason Christie from Lincoln, also improved this summer, Allen said. “He improved a lot this summer,” he said. ‘‘I think he’s going to be able to do two or three events for us this year, maybe more.” Considered by college coaches as one of the top high school gymnasts in the country last year, Christie’s ability was still surprising, Allen said. “Christie is better than I thought he was,” Allen said.
