the war for Cuban freedom has been fought and victory crowns American arms cThc Maine has been remembered and its murdered sea men have been avenged in far away waters The Asiatic squadron of the United States Commodore Dewey com manding engaged and completely defeat ed the Asiatic squadron of Spain in the harbor of Manila in the Philippine Isl ands Reports of the terrific battle at the time this is written are meager From the general drift of the dispatches it would appear that Commodore Dewey with his fleet of Jive cruisers the Olympia flag ship Baltimore Boston Concord and ltaleigh and the gunboat Petrel COMMOnOrE DEWEY HEKO OF MANILA proached the shore under cover of the darkness on Saturday night and at day break Sunday morning steamed into Ma nila Bay wheie he found himself con lronted by the Spanish fleet which had not sailed away as had been stated and the shore batteries Numerically the odds were airainst him To our six cruis er and one gunboat were opposed eight cruisers and live gunboats To our 118 guns were opposed 14S guns But the American guns were heavier the Ameri can vessels were stancher and stronger siiitl American seamen and gunners there are no better in the world The action began at once and there were two en gagements during the day the result of which was the destruction of the Reina Christina the flagship of the Spanish squadron the Don Juan de Austria whose commander was killed and the Castilla Madrid dispatches say that oth ers were sunk to avoid capture and that the American fleet was severely dam aged There are no intimations how ever that any American vessel was de stroyed If there had been the news would have been sent out by the Span iards speedily and exultantly Under the protection of the guns of the Manila fortifications the Spanish war ships opened fire on the American fleet s X For several hours the harbor resounded with the roar of the guns the crashing of sieel and timbers the shrieks and groans of the wounded Thick clouds of smoke nt times almost obscured the opposing fleets from each other A well directed shot reached the iron cruiser Don Juan de Austria a vessel of 1100 tons A lerrinV explosion followed and the ship wis blown up All the time during the first engagement the American ships were under way their maneuvering being in tended to render the marksmanship of the Spanish gunners less effective There was a heavy loss of life among the Spanish Captain Cadarzo command ing the Maria Christina was killed Com modore Montejo commanding the fleet shifted hi flag from the Maria Christina to the Isle de Cuba a much smaller steel protected cruiser just before the Chris tina sank The blowing up of the Don Juan de Austria was attended by a great loss of life among the crew her com mander also being killed From the tenor of the dispatches it seems certaiu that the Spanish Asiatic jleet has been wiped out and that all that yjis saved was Spanish honor a flimsy sort of salvage which will not prove spe cially condoling to the Spanish people This crushing defeat is but the begin ning of lhe end If the Spanish vessels which left Cape Verde are crossing the ocean which doubtful they will never go back Spjijn will lose another fleet Meanwhile the North Atlantic squadron will lighten its grip upon Cuba reduc ing the fortifications of Havana as it has ihw of Matanzas and Cabanas while it ilriii up communications with the iu snririujw jimler Gomez and Garcia and supplies jhpn with the arms and muni tions ihttyjjo adly ueeded The battle iu Manila Bay is the first chapter in the story of Cuban monitor Terror cap tured the big Spanish steamer Guido bound from Corunna Spain for Havana The prize had on board a large cargo of provisions and money intended for the Spanish troops in Cuba The capture took place ten miles off Cardenas after a desperate chase during which the Ter ror and the gunboat Machias fired blow ing the Spaniards pilot house into the water The crew of thirty eight was tak en to Key West The Guido is a vessel of 2065 tons net and is one of the rich est prizes captured GREAT NAVAL COMBAT CASUALTIES OF THE FIGHT Spanish cruiser Reina Marie Christina Admirals flagship Madrid lost cruisers 3 WASHINGTON WILD WITH JOY News of Victory Off Manila Met with Patriotic Acclaim The national capital was delirious with joy Sunday night over the news of the glorious naval victory in the Philippines The bulletin boards in front of the news paper offices were surrounded all the evening by enthusiastic cheering crowds and at midnight the broad avenues were still thronged with excited groups dis cussing the meager details of the battle while hordes of scrambling newsboys fill ed the city with the noise of their cries of extras Not since the dark days of the great civil conflict of a third of a century ago have the people of the capital city been so profoundly moved by war news Said President MeKiuley when he was shown the Madrid dispatch regarding the engage ment between Deweys squadron and the Spanish fleet off the Philippines That looks favorable If the Spaniards admit that much Dewey must have won a sub stantial victory When the news came indicating a great victory for the American squadron the en tluiskiMii of the people was let loose and the streets of the city rang with cheers throughout the night -The first news of the battle received in Washington came in a brief cablegram from Madrid about 8 oclock Sunday evening As the night wore on the cable continued to sing the news of victory for the squadron of Admiral Dewey and the interest grew into tremendous excitement Ordinarily Washington is the quietest of cities on Sunday but as bulletin after bulletin was posted in front of the news paper offices each successive one convey ing information more gratifying then its predecessor the crowds in the streets be came uproarious Good as well as bad news spread rap idly and by 10 oclock the streets were CARRlKt ORDKRS TO GOMEZ United States Officer Reaches Camp of the Insurgent Commander Lieut Henry H Whitney of the Fourth United States Artillery reached Gen Gomezs camp Friday night with an es cort provided by Col Bermudez who met him on the coast near Caibarieu Tues day morning Lieut Whitney carried let ters to the insurgent commander-in-chief and instructions from Jen Miles of the United States army These instructions direct the Cuban arujy to move to a point where they will unite with an army under Brig Gen Nunez which is to be equip ped by the United States Nunezs army will bring along complete equipments for 30000 men A point on the northern coast is to bq seized and fortified as a base of supplies The commander-in-chief and Lieut Whit ney naturally declined to reveal to corre spondents the point selected for the base but the Cuban officers say it is Cardenas From the same source it is gathered that the first offensive action of the allied troops is to be against Matanzas which is only twenty five miles from Cardenas The idea is that Captain General Blanco will not dare weaken the force he has gathered for the defense of Havana to relieve Matanzas This point once taken the base of operations will be transferred to that city and the investment of Ha vana will follow MKN WHO FIGHT FKVHR Senate Military Committee Wants 10 OOO lmmunes Enlisted The Senate Committee on Military Af fairs made a favorable report on a bill authorizing the enlistment of an addition al brigade of volunteer engineers In connection with the offers made by re cently orgnnized troops in the South who have had yellow learned Sunday through its secret agents that the wreck of the battleship Maine lying in Havana harbor had been destroyed by the Span ish authorities It is supposed by offi cials of the administration that this action on the part of the Spanish authorities had been taken to prevent raisiug of the wreck after the capture of Havana This information has intensified the desire to avenge the Maine course of construc tion at the entrance to Matanzas harbor They were pretty thoroughly destroyed The flagship was first fired upon by the batteries on Point Rubal Cava and Point Maya while the Puritan and they all fell wide of the mark no damage of any kind result ing A shrapnell shell exploded above the New York and one shell exploded just beyond the stern All others were wast ed The batteries wore reduced in just twenty miuuts The final shot from the enemy came from Ituba Cava and drew from the Puritan a reply from one of her twelve inch guns which struck the bat tery and blew up a section of it The United States ships did not retire until the Spanish refused to renew the engage ment They left the batteries in ruins During the engngementnot a soul could be seen on the shore and the
