Dr. Worthman (Continued from Page One) blither tune and the cat settled down in front of the old heating stove to purr contentedly. The advent of the telephone into rural life made it possible for Mrs. Worthman to call the nearest farm and tell them to watch. Then when the doctor returned to town she would run , out with a pan of oats while he attended to his office calls and then he would again be on his way. Mrs. Worthman (Battle Stevens) came to Louisville from Boise, Idaho. The family spent the summer with H. E. Brown, ' Hattle's uncle, who was the town druggist for many years. They then moved to Lincoln where Hattie lived until 1902 when she married Doctor E. II. The Worthmans had three children: son, Herbert and daughters, Mrs. George Erickson of Omaha and Mrs. Lester Farrls of Broken Bow. The three doc tors Worthman are not the only . ones of the family who are Interested ln medicine. Mr,. Erickson, now deceased, was also a doctor and two of Mrs. Worth man's grandsons are now study ing medicine, one a senior in medical school at Omaha and the other taking pre-med ln Lin coln. Recalling the experiences of the past Mrs. Worthman com ments that she does not regret them, "After all, we didn't know we were going through hard ship!" she says and adds, "It's nice to have them t0 compare with." She recalls that the doctor his first car in 1908 and with the coming of the auto a gradual improvement in roads could be seen until today, in his son's 33rd year of practice, a comfor table car can reach almost any farm in the area regardless of weather. Yes, the days of the horse and buggy doctor are gone and with it the old time neighborlineso of watching for the car lights or listening for the horse as the doctor hurried by, but still in memory lingers the comfort and cheer which Dr. E. H. Worthman left at each farmstead.
