m o w EDITORIALS The Hunting Season, 1958 The hunting season has already hejrmi in some states, even though the weather is iiniimifnitahly hot in most of them, and even though the peak of the season is still some time away. Every year a number of hunters are killed, or wounded, because of careless ac cidents. Loaded guns in hunting vehicles cause some. Hunters, of course, should not cross fences with loaded guns, and a load ed gun (or an unloaded one) should never be pointed to another hunter. In addition to this, care should be exercised to see that the barrel 1 is free of foreign matter at all times, and that the gun is in reasonably good working order, oiled, etc. One thing about hunting accidents which may surprise many readers is the fact that hunting accidents do not neces sarily involve beginners. On the contrary many accidents occur among veteran hunters who have become careless or cocksure because of the long experience they have under their belts. As a word of advice to those who tend to shoot quickly, or get excited, one should alwavs carefully identify his target before pulling the trigger. Every Thanksgiving Day a number of hunters are shot down in the brush, mistakenly identified as deer. The hunting season of 1958 could be the best in years if carefulness holds accidents to the minimum, if game laws are obeyed within reason, and if some thought is given to preserving game for another year.
