I '- - - -r-i i i I I - i, .-ii-M-ii-M , m-m n-i ,- . . , EDITORIALS Down Memory Lane The Real War The real war betwoon Russia and the United States, already in progress, is an i eonomic war. Some of us tend to minimize the solemn warnings of Nikita Khrush chev, current Russian dictator, who says very plainly that Russia is willing to fight an economic war with the United State arid will win. When Khrushchev first uttered these sounds, some years ago, Americans laugh ed in his face because U. S. industrial production was far greater than that of Russia, and because we were enjoying a booming economy. Today, however, with the recession in progress, and with Russian economic pro gress making impressive gains, while our industrial productivity steadily drops, Khrushchev's words are not so funny. In tact reports from Europe indicate that Rus sia is just now beginning to hurt the United States in the field of international trade. In recent weeks and months the Rus sians have moved into the aluminum, tin, platinum, and zinc markets. In addition, they have entered other fields, and price cuts have been forced upon democratic exporters in practically all these export fields. This is apparently the latest move in Khrushchev's attempt to make good his boast that he sill take the world market away from the United States. One of the first Russian steps in this effort was the supplying of cheap aluminum to England. In' fact, the Russians supplied so much cheap aluminum to England that Canada began to lose her big market and a major Canadian producver was forced to cut the price of aluminum. A few days after the Canadian sup plier cut the price of aluminum, American producers were forced to cut their prices also. Likewise, the price of platinum has just been reduced in the United States, viUi the explanation that Russian export of platinum, at lower prices, was beginning to; threaten U. S. markets in Europe. In addition to these developments it is reported by the United Nations in New York that Russia is entering the field as ail exporter of tin in another major move to compete in the field of world trade. The price structure of tin is said to be weak al ready, and the threat of communist exports is. likely to bring about a price cut. All of this does not mean that U. S. ex porters should throw up their hands and surrender. It does mean, however, that the Russian economic threat is real, that this country cannot afford a recession which re duces the productivity of its industrial out put and that if necessary govern ment action may eventually have to be taken to insure U. S. survival and 'Well being in the battle for world trade. Howard's Homespun What's become of that friend who borrowed a few dollars from you a month or so ago? A conversationalist, it seems, is one who can tell twice as many details as anybody- wants to hear. If you haven't taken any exercise in the last few years, you might get in the next good marble game you see, and work up from there. )r YEARS AGO J Three Hattsmouth young people received their degrees at the University of Nebraska sixty-seventh annual commen cement at Lincoln, the class numbered 848.
