J r M lt "w V V w . . w w ' V r r - - TTTn PLATTSMOTTTTI JOURNAL Thursday, June 18, 195; PAGE SIX Rerouting Upheld For Highway 59 At Weeping Wafer Highway No. 50 will toe re routed two miles west of Weep ing Water apparently if a hear ing before the State Highway Department and Governor Ro bert Crosby is any scale. Tuesday, Governor Crosby told a group of 25 protesting Weep ing Water business men that the "sufficiency ratings"' of the Highway Department advises that the best and most econo mical route is two miles west of Weeping Water. The depart ment has proposed constructing a hard-surface road from the Cass-County-Otto County line north through Louisville, by passing Weeping Water. Written statements, signed by Weeping Water city officials and Cass county officials three years ago had approved the proposed rerouting plans for Highway 50. Wm. F. Nolte, only county commissioner still on the board that signed the statement, said here Wednesday' morning that he feels the county should stick by the statement. He said the statement was signed at a meet ing in Weeping Water with city, county and state officials at tending. The route change was approved after Weeping Water had been assured federal aid for rebuilding a bridge washed out in the 1950 flood. "I don't feel the county or citizens of Weeping Water should back out on cur agreement," Nolte said. At the Tuesday hearing before the state officials, Weeping Wa ter business men stressed the social and business effect that rerouting the highway would have cn the community. Dallas Wendt, Community Club presi dent, Attorney Harold Elliott, Rev. Fred C. Gardner and Tom Stacey spoke in behalf of the Weeping Water business men against the proposed new route. State Engineer L. N. Ress told the group that the best way to improve the highway as it nears Louisville has been a topic of discussion for 15 years and said he was "amazed that a change in plans would be asked at this late date.'' In addition to lower costs of building, because of its location away from streams, Ress said a road is needed to re lieve traffic on U. S. 73-75 as well as serve local needs. Re construction with some reloca tion is now planned on U. S. 73 75. which runs through Platts mouth, Ress said. The Governor, however, ex plained that he believed the Weeping Water residents were "exaggerating the effect on the town." He said Highway 50 is rated "emergency" and will be built in the next two years, but that it will follow the route se lected by engineers and approv ed for matching of federal funds. Commissioner Herman L. Bor nemeier, chairman of the Cass countv board, also attended the hearing at Lincoln. He briefly outlined the problem which has Confronted the county in build ing roads and explained "they want roads but they want some body wav over there to pay for them." He told how such groups had succeeded in killing propos ed mill levies for such added construction." Bornemeier advised that he won't fight people to build roads, ' but suggested that they unite ind work together. Pi .:-....., . ' " Sl mm m ft n v I 11 M11 . 11 1 ki II i . nvi o ii .
