Haase and Donald had siiDper Thursday at the Gustave Woitzel home. Mrs. E. E. Odell was a guest, with a group of other ladi.. at a luncheon at the home of Mrs. H. E. Dougherty in Omaha Thursday. South Afhlnfl School Dismissed After Roof Is Damaged By Fire Fire was discovered in the roof of District 58 school house in Cass County about 1 o'clock Thursday forenoon after the teacher. Mrs. Harry Farmer saw i a small grass fire on the play ground when she went outside to investigate the grass fire she saw that the roof on the south end of the building was burn ing. Mrs. Farmer went to a near by farm home and called The Ashland Fire Department. The telephone ooerator also ran;: several of the local telephone lines and farmers and the Fire Department responded Dromot Iv. While the flames were being 1 extinguished much of the school room furnishings and many books were carried out. School was dismissed for the rest of the day and for a few days into the next week while the roof was being rerjaired, the ceiling also had to be refinished be cause of the water damage to the plaster There ws very little wind Thursday which pre vented the fire from spreading. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Januon of Elsie came Thursday for a weeks visit with Mrs. Jamesons "arents. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bower. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Laughlin called on Mrs. Laughlins cou sin. Mrs. Letha Keever of Nor ton. Kansas at the home of Mrs. Keevers daughter. Mrs. Gaulbreath in Lincoln, where Mrs. Keever is recuperating from a recent operation. Plattsmouth Anxious To "I sure am anxious to get home and act civilized again,'" , i Dafe Fleischman wrote in a re- ' cent letter to his mother, Mrs. Kntfmnn I And from further information contined in the letter, it sounds as though he won't have to long too wait. "We arrived in Yokosuka, Ja pan, March 21 and I guess we are going to spend about three weeks here and then take off for Pearl Harbor. We will stay in Pearl Harbor two or three days and then head for the states," the navy veteran writes. Fleischman also writes that he has been on liberty with Bob Moore several times. "His ship is docked about a half a block from ours and you should have seen him when I walked into his office," he writes his mother. -He darn near fell over when I walked in. It was sure good to see Bob again. I guess he likes the navy pretty well," the sail or writes. On night duty on the U. S. S. Antiet am. airplane carrier. Fleischman said that "nobody thought we were good enough j tn rnme out here (Korea at first but we came out and broke darn near all the records other carriers have set," he explams. The Plattsmouth sailor is i looking forward to a 30-day leave as soon as his ship returns , to the states. He received a commendation j from his commanding officer j too. In a letter to Mrs. Hoffman, Sister Seriously 111 In Hospital Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Boiler called on Mrs. Boilers mother, Mrs. Olive Whitlatch Thursday and took Mrs. Whitlatch to Lin coln where she is staying at the home of another daughter. Mrs. John Abbott. Mrs. Abbott un derwent a mor operation at St. Elizabeth's hospital Friday forenoon, and will have to have another in about ten days. Mrs. Abbott is very ill and her hus band and mother are the only visitors allowed. South Ashland Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Hauschild and Billy and Betty had dinner Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Deal. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bornemeiir were Thursday evening guests at the Don Rau home. Lloyd Reuter of Alvo spent from Thursday until Saturday at the Harold Kellogg home. Orville Sandy returned to the Harold Richards home Thurs day after a weeks visit with his daughter and son-in-law. Doc tor and Mrs. Robert Benner of Ogalalla. Mrs. Arthur Laughlin and James spent Thursday after noon with Mrs. Myron Laugh lin. Mr. and Mrs. Wm Weaver and Dennis and Mrs. Dora Berger were Thursday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Bachman. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Strong and family were Friday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clar ence Wills and family. South Ashland residents ex tend their sympathy to Mrs. W. A. Jones and her family. Mr. Jones passed away in a Lincoln hospital Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Jones lived in this vicinity a good many years and have many friends here who were saddened by Mr. Jones' passing. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mansfield, Sam and Willajean went to Schuyler Sunday where they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Busche. Mr. and Mrs. George Mansfield of Paullina, Iowa. J were also guests there. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Roeber and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Roeber and sons attended the sym phony band concert at the Uni- . versity of Nebraska coliseum I Sunday afternoon. South Ashlana Petersons Move To South Ashland Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Peter son have moved from Ashland to their farm in this vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maack and children moved from the Pe terson farm to the home of Mr. Maack's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Maack where they will live while they are building a new home on the farm they re cently purchased, it being known as the John King farm. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Blum spent Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Don Rau and family. Arm strong have received word tha their son-in-law, Harold E. Shaw A. E. C, has recently re turned to the naval base at Quonset Point, R. I., after a six week's stay at Naples, Italy, where he had participated in the land, air and sea maneuvers in the Mediterranean area. He was operated on Tuesday evening and is recovering nicely. Boy Returns From Hospital Norman Hughson, 14. son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hughson has returned from University Hos pital at Omaha where he re cently underwent an operation for an ear condition and ade noids. He returned to school Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Mayfield of Louisville were in Plattsmouth Wednesday to look after some business affairs.
