I I SUNRISE GOLFERS The Sunrise Golfers opened the season of 1937 with >a de lightful day of golf last Thurs day at Miller Park. During the business meeting that evening at the Urban League Coinmun ity Center numbers were drawn for golf matches to be played be fore the next meeting on May 14th, ia,t which time the scores are to be brought in and record ed. Since there is to be a prize given to the one holding the lowest score atl the end of each month, very keen competition is shown among the players. The following officers were elected and appointed : Rae Lee Jones, president: Delores Blackwell, vice pres; Flora Morris, treasurer; Edrose Willis, reporter. Here’s hoping this wea'ther clears up and gives us a break on the golf links. , --- _H. S. S... LEADS IN HIGH SCHOOL S.BALL LEAGUE By Joe Brooks Angelo Merriweather’s last years champions took first place in the Urban League high school soft ball tournament. Tuesday April 27th was «'( great day for the last year champions, due to the good pi/tihing of Joe Lazine and Joe Breedlove, H. S. S_ defeated Woodson AC to take first place The sttejrs of the game were II. Franklin, P. Franklin and “Tax” Ennly). Although Joe Brooks, the hot comer sacker for the champions made three errors he started the rally in the sixth inning by clouting a two bagger wth two very fist men on base. P. Franklin and Woods, Merriweather cham pions, promises to give the fans a thrill at its home ground sit uated. at 21st and Burdette streets. Mjnrty Thomas, the head ‘in stmetor at the Urban League is keeping up the good work by his great umpiirng. She can hit, run and eiaitch. Girls there is an example of a real ball player. The slow ball, the Rabes gals try to kill and just barely hit. Not enough pep, too much slow motion. We know “Baby Ruth” just can't play anymore —her day is gone with the wind but the others we must find out the trouble. The Malashock team were heavy hitters larcurate catchers and very fast runners. They placed a nice game. Better news next time, I hope. Mr. Carl Rabe was a speeta lor at 20th and Burdette and was mu.ch disappoint ed with the showing of the girls. Donaldson and Payne, batter ies for the Rabes looked good even in defeat. Donaldson left the game with ai score 2 to 1 in favor of Malashock, due to slow fielding of Stewart and Griffin who allowed singles to go for a homer anda double. The Rinbes are makng a poor showing in upholding the pres tige of that famous Robin Hood Beer. .? Jacob’s AME church church Sunday with Rev. W. M. Mjajors delivering both ser mons. Recent movers of Clarinda are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Sweet# who will make their future home in Pola, Kansas. Mr. Eugene Griggs, Robert Franklin and Mrs. Merrill Graggs motored to Iowa, City last Sunday. Plans axe being made for the banquet to be given in honor of the king and queen of Clar inda on May 4th. Four contest ants are now entered in the race. Church was well attended Sunday all day. The pastor spoke on “Space to Rejpent’ at 11 o’clock. His even ing subject at 8 o’clock “The Ana Univiehsity” Revival closed Friday. We must say Rev. Seara preached 10 days of soul stirring sermons. We all hope to see him in our fall Revival in October The Pastor’s Aid met at the home of Mrs. Elnora Jennings Thursday evening at 7:30. The weeklv prize «a< won by Mjrs- Frances Ander son. The cihoir under the direction of Mrs- Frances Anderson had a chicken dinner at the church Thursday April 29th. The Misision soptefty und^d the leadership of Mrs. Elnora Jennings is busy getting ready to sbnd the delegated to Council Bluffs on May 12th and 13th. The whole church welcomed Mrs Lulu Zackbry back and hopes she will be able to (stay at her post. The Torch Bearers club met at the home of Mrs. Elnora Jennings Monday evening. Little Thurman Jennings is still on the sick list with a bad cold- We do hope he will feel better at our next writing. Mr- L. Z. Malone is on his va cation.. Wo all hope he is enjoying himself.
