WM. II. HOOVER, City Treasurer, ii a sterling i?puracan and a faithful oHicer. Whenever such men are assailed with disparaging, untruthful re ports, it become tbe duty of a faithful public jour nal to gather the facts and set them before the pub lic. The charge, that we refer to, is that Mr. Hoover, as City Treasurer, bought orders aVa big shave and therewith gobbled up all the cash that was paid in on City Uxes. To set this report at rest we have ascertained from the Collector that during 18C7 the amount of City Taxes collected was f 2,CSl 77; of this 2,423 JO was paid in Orders, and $251,87 in Ca;h ; the Collector's per cent. due in eahcu tbe whole amount collected ia 12C3 17, or $16 23 more than all tbe cash received. Now, where is the cath that Mr. Hoover can apply his -pocket full of orders" on. The duty incumbent upon a public to defend any good officer becomes a p leasure w ben tLat man is a Republican.
