nal to gather the facts and set them before the pub
lic. The charge, that we refer to, is that Mr.
Hoover, as City Treasurer, bought orders aVa big
shave and therewith gobbled up all the cash that
was paid in on City Uxes. To set this report at
rest we have ascertained from the Collector that
during 18C7 the amount of City Taxes collected
was f 2,CSl 77; of this 2,423 JO was paid in Orders,
and $251,87 in Ca;h ; the Collector's per cent.

erary and News Depot ; a negro was drowned in the
river at our Levee off the J. D. Perry ; Ryan's the
atrical troupe performed in this city ; E. Greon
opened a shoe shop ; T. M. Talbott, Dentist, located
in this city ; the erection of the Congregational
and Christian Churches was let ; first Circus per
formed in this ci ty on the 23d.
August. Theo. Hill made extensive additions to
his store room ; $5000 1 Hotel Script was burned
on the 25th.
September. T. J. White bought out A. S. Hol
iday's stock of drugs ; Theo. Hill shipped the first
consignment of wheat from this county on the 1st ;
Evan Worthing opened a new Billiard Room in
Johnson's Hall; A. J. Berry took charge of th
Browntilie House ; Richard Brown, tbe founder of
this city, went to Texas, where he came noar being
bung during 'John Brown" exoitement.
October. The first cumber of the Nebraska
Farmer appeared on the 1st; the firtt annual Ne
maha County Fair was held in this city cn-the 6th
and 7th ; Carrn A Lushbaugb's Bank moved into
the buiiding next to Theo. Hill's Etore ; the Ladies
of the 1st Presbyterian Church gave ft Fair t
Bank Hall; the Bell for the 1st Paesbyterian Church
arrived; the frame of Whitney's block was up and
fell on the 18th j P. G.Henigon opened a new Grv
cery ; Dr. G win erected tbe brick residence on 1st
and Richard sts. ; Jacob Strickler built the store
now occupied by Jas. Berry A Co. ; J. W. Middle
ton built bis present shop.
November. The Journal sold to Fairbrother A
Hacker, who then started tho Herald at Nemihn
City ; Ab. Gates built a residence oorner of 4th and
Water.
December. Mrs. Hendgcn- opened a Milinarj
Shop.
January, I860. C. G. Dorsoy opened a Law
Office; Dr. nolladay finished the building corner
of Main and 1st sts.; Ja s. Berry & Co., finished
the building cow sccupied by Bedford A Conner.
February. Brownville High School started
under tho Sup rintendance cf Rev. T. W. Tiplon ;
Brownville Library and Lyceum otganized under a
charter ; Ice broke up on the 25th.
March. George Eigkbart fell off the ferry boat
and was drowned on tbe 9th ; Wm. L, Bojdston
made the firsi shipment of cattle frm Nebraska
from this city on the 13ih : D. J. Martin finished
a largo addition to bis stora room corner of Main
and 1st sts. ; the Badger troupe performed here.

ing that the city have the Levee secared by abut

There is a very unsettled feeling in the market
pending the action of Congress upon financial ques
tiotls. We have financial doctors without number,
all rr'escribins: for our financial ills. The amended
bill reported by Senator Sherman from the Com
mittee on Finance, for funding the publio debt is,
in brief,as follows;
Section 1. Authorizes a 5 per cent. 10.40-ear
bond, interest and principal in gMd.
Section 2. The bond are named "Consolidated
Loan," and are exempted from taxation, except for
incomes, at such rates as may be assessed on otner
incomes. 1
L Section 3. Appropriates 135 millions per annum,
with which to piay interest on toe wnoie aeoi p;iy
principal as it tails due, and, if anything is left
reduce the debt.
Section 4. "l?ive-tw?nty bonds shall, after the
expiration of five years from theirdAte.at theoption
of the holders thereof, be exchanged for tho bon la
authorisel by this Act; and such as are redeem
able (old 5-20s) shall be presented for exchange
on or before the first of No vember next, and not
thereafter; and the residue to be presented within
six months after the expiration of five years from
their date, and not thereafter."
