Der Kon. grch wird es jedenfalls auf sich neh. inen, die Meinungsverschiedenheiten, die zwischen der Bundes.Schiffahrts. koniinission und General Goethals ausgxbrochen sind, auszugleichen. Heute wird im Hanse die $750,000,. 000 Bewillignngsvorlage zwecks Er. bauung von Handclsschiffm ausge nommen werden. Man wird die verschiedenen Ansichten betreffs Kon. struktion von Stahlschiffon ' oder Holzschiffen hören. Die Schiffabrts. behörde ist immer noch der Ansicht, dasz die U-Boote a,n besten mittels Holzschiffen bekämpft werden können. Holzhändler werden die Idee, lioi, der Konstruktion der Holzschiffe (schwimmende Särge) Abstand zu nehmen, nachdrücklichst bekämpfe, während andere wieder von der Idee des General ttoetbals betreffs Er. bauung von Stahlschiffcn ganz und gar eingenommen sind. Herr Teninnn, Vorsitzender der Vundesschiffahrts-Behörde, griff 0k'. ueral Gocthals an,' weil dieser sei. iien Gedanken über die Holzschiffe gelegentlich eines Festessen Anödruck verliehen habe, anstatt vor dem Kon. grch. Er sagte, das; jene Behörde, deren Norjiizender er sei, nur von einein Gedanken beseelt sei, und der wäre, das; deil deutschen Tauchbooten der Garails gen, acht werde. Auch beabsichtige man nicht, sich mit Goe. theils über die Schifjofrage zu strei. ten, denn sa ctwas könne in Berlin nur angenehm bcrübren. Diktator ernannt wurde, hat bezüglich der Beschrän kung des Getreideverbrauchs sür den Ziocck der Brauerei und Brennerei folgende Erklärung über den Stand Punkt, den er zur Sache einnimmt, abgegeben: Wenn die LevcrBill, die sich mit der Verwendung von Getreide sür Brau, und Brcnnrreizwccke be saßt, mir zur Begutachtung oder zur Entscheidung vorgelegt wird, werde ich zunächst in Erfahrung bringen, welcher Prozentsatz des Getreide sür gedachte Zivecke zur Verwendung kommt. Die dänische Regierung er hält ihre Neutralität unter den schioierigsten Verhältnissen aufricht. Man nimmt hier an, dasz ein Ab schneiden des Landes von mnerikani. schcn Rohprodukten, wie es angeblich geplant wird, das Land an den Rand des wirtschaftlichen Ruins bringen würde. Daß eine industrielle Lahm legnng Dänemarks ungeheure Ent behrungen und anderes mehr sür die Bevölkerung bedeuten tuürde, ist selbstverständlich. In wohl unterrichteten Kreisen wird darauf hingewiesen, daß eine derartige Maßnahme seitens der Ver. Staaten Dänemark direkt in die Ar. ine Dentschlands treiben müßte, da eö darauf angewiesen sein würde, die landwirtschaftlichen Produkte, das einzige, was das Land selbst erzeugt, an Deutschland zu verkaufen, um Geld für seine Bevölkerung zu be. kommen. Hoffen auf Ausgleich. zMan hofft jedoch noch immer, daß die dänische Handelsmission, die dem. nächst nach den Ver. Staaten gehen wird, imstande sein wird, bestehende Mißverständnisse aufzuklären und die Haltung der Ver. Staaten gegenüber Dänemark noch in zwölfter Stund? zn ändern. Der schwedische Minister Mauricc Egan, der sich augenblicklich hier be findet, beobachtet den politischen Ho rizvnt mit gespannter Aufmerksam seit. Er wird in den nächsten Tagen schon ivieder nach Stockholm zurück gehen. Man ist davon überzeugt, daß sei lies der nordischen Länder allein in den Krieg ans der einen cder ande- reu cite eintreten wuroe, wen die Gefahr, der exponierten Lage Schwe dens und Dänemarks wegen, eine zu große ist. sollte irgendwelche Ak tion ecsokge, so ist es ziemlich sicher, daß die drei nozidischen Länder nur gemciniaiu yanoeiu wuroen. ' Die Politik sieht vor. daß die Ver. Staaten ein Ausfuhrverbot aus Roh. materialicu und Lebeusmittel nach neutralen Ländern Europas erlassen, um diese Länder dazu zu zwingen, ihre Ausfuhr nach Deutschland ein zustellen und bei der Aufgabe mit. zuhelfen. die Alliierten mit Lebens. Mitteln zu versehen. Jedes neutrale Schiff, das mit einer Ladung für ein neutrales Land einen amerikanischen Hasen anliefe, würde ach den gemachten Vorschlä. gen für jede Reise nach seinem Hei. matlande vin oder zwei Reisen im Dienste der Alliierten nach England oder Frankreich machen müssen. Harden warnt vor den ver. Staaten! London, 28. Mai. Der hiesigen Times" zufolge soll der Publizist Maximilian Harden in seiner Zeit. schrift Die Zuknnft" gewarnt ha." ben, die Ver. taateu nicht zu unter schätzen. Mit Zweidrittel Mehrheit hat der Ver. Staatenkongrcß be schlössen, sagt Harden, die allgemeine Dienstpflicht einzuführen, und bis September können 500.000 Mann nach Frankreich geworfen werden. Dann verweist er daraiif, daß die britische und französische Kriegskom inission nicht allein nach Waslington gegangen sind, um dem Präsidenten die Wangen zu streicheln, sondern um sich auf die internationalen Fra. gen nach Herstellung des Friedens zu einigen. Es wäre besser, wenn die Zcntralmächte Frieden schließen, ehe Amerika seine ganze Kraft in diesem Kriege entfalten könnte. Vestillationen stellen Betrieb ein! Washington. 2. Mai. W. S. Welsoro, Präsident der Amerika As. sociation of Eooperagc Jnicrcsts, hat der Zwischenstaatlichen Handelskom. Mission die Mitteilung gemacht, daß die Destillationen in den Ver. Staa ten den Betrieb vorläusig eingestellt bnben und ihre Rcservcvorräte ver Zausen. Tornados in Illinois, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana u. Uentucky! Fordern 238 Menschenleben Sams tag und Sonntag: Sachschaden geht in die Millionen. Chicago, Jll 28. Mai. Kaum hat sich der Schrecken über den Tor, nado, der am Freitag einen Teil von Kansas heimsuchte, und tvobei 2U Personen ihr Leben verloren, ctlvas verflüchtigt, als . schon wieder neue Schreckensnachrichten eintreffen. Am Samstag wütete ein Tornado in II, linois nnd Indiana und am Sonn tag hatten das südliche Illinois, sowie Teile von Tennesee, Arkansas und Kciituckii unter einem solchen furchtbar zu leiden. J,n Ganzen wurden in den drei Tagen 238 Per soncn gettöct und 1,122 verletzt, und zwar verteileil sich dieselben folgen dermaßen alif die von dm Tornados betroffenen Staaten: Illinois 123 Tote und 7u0 Verwundete: Ken tuest 50 Tote und 47 Verwnndcte; Kansas 2C Tote und 60 Verwunde. te: Alabama 12 Tote: Arkansas 9 Tote und 12 Verwundete; Indiana 7 Tote und 200 Verwundete; und Tennessce 6 Tote und 53 Vcrwun. dete. Tausende sind beimatlos und der Schadcn geht in die Millionen. 2 Tote in Mattoon, Jll. Der schwerste Schaden wurde am Samstag in Mattoon, Jll einer Stadt von etwa zehntausend Be wohnern angerichtet, wo 62 Per sonen ums Leben kamen. Der in dieser Stadt und nächster Umgebung angerichtete Schaden wird allein aus über zwei Millionen Tollars ge. schätzt. Die Zahl der Verletzten be. ziffert sich' ans 1300 bis 500. Fast hundert Gebäudegevierte lourdcn na. hezu vollständig in Trümmern gc legt. ' Das zwölf Meilen östlich von Mat toon gelegene (Xhnrleston wiirde eben, falls von dem Stunnwind teilweise niedcrgesegt. Hier beträgt der Ver. lust an Menschenleben süufzig, toiih. rcnd über hundert Personell verletzt wurden. Der hier angerichtete Scha. den wird aus eine Million Dollars geschätzt. Tornado begann nahe St. Louis. Der Tornado oder vielmehr ineh. rere derartige Sturmwinde entstan. den in der Nachbarschaft von St. Louis Und bahnten sich dann ihren Weg in nördlicher sowie östlicher Richtung, überall Tod und Vcrwü. stung hinter sich zurücklassend. Sie drangen nördlich bis in die Nähe Chicagos vor und suchteil auch einen Teil Jndianas heim. Hebron, Jnd,, wurde fast gänzlich dem Erdboden gleichgemacht. Hier sollen neun Per. sonen den Tod gesmiden haben. Wei tere Ortschaften in Illinois, welche nichr oder weniger heftiger von den Tornados betroffen wurden sind: Westcrvelt mit fünf Toten und 21 Verwundeten. Manhattan. Joliet. El. Wood. Modesto, Bloomington, Pearl und andere. Der Bürgerincister von Mattoon hat sich an die Bevölkerung turn Jlli. nois um Hilfe gewandt. Er erklärt, daß 2,000 Personen Heimat, lind ob. dachlos sind und daß viele Broker Werber getötet wurden. Geld wird benötigt", schließt der Hilferuf, es muß herbeigeschafft werden." Der Tornado schien es am die dichter bevölkerten Gegenden abge feheil zil bauen, da hauptsächlich Städte und Ortschaften die Wucht seiner Stöße auszuhalten hatten, während das offene Land mit einem blauen Auge davonkam. Er nahm keine direkte grade Richtung, son dern pendelte von einer Seite nach der anderen wie ein Elcphantenrüs. sel auf der Suche uach Nahrung. Die von ihm verwüstete Strecke hatte eine Länge von etwa 150 Meilen und eine Breite von teilweise sechs Mei len. ' Sonntags Tornados. Gestern wurden Alabama, Tcnncs. sec, Arkansas und Kcntucky die Cpser von Tornados, die dort eben falls riesigen Schadcn anrichteten uiid zusammen 81 Menschenleben heischten, während mehrere Hunderte Verletzte Zu beklagen sind. Ein anderer Tornado fegte über 2?urphpsboro und Williöville im südlichen Illinois hinweg. In Kcntncky hatten die Orte Dub lin, Bondurant, Ledsord, Hick,nan, Clinton und Bradwcll hauptsächlich unter der Gewalt des Orkans anszn. stehen. Die vcidcu letzten Ortschas. ten sind fast völlig hinweggefegt. Bei Hickman kamen ziuanzig oder mehr Personen ums Leben. Soutl, Tversbng. Tcnn., Bhthe ville, Ark., und Sayrr, Ala., litte ebenfalls furchtbar. , !l alle von dem Sturm betros Sechs schwedische Dampfer torpediert! Drei andere gekapert; ein Spanier nd cln Brasilianer stnd der senkt worden. London, 23. Mai. Sechs schwe dische Dampfer find auf ihrer Fahrt von Schweden nach Finnland in der Ostsee versenkt worden, wie eine Reutcrdepcsche aus Stockholm besagt. Es sind dies Kyros", 221 Tonnen; Thcrese", - 208 Tonnen; Olga", 153 Tonnen, und die größeren Tampser Pauline", Kjell" und ..Eric". Außerdem wurden die drei schive. dischen Dampfer Lessi", Gocta" lind Marta" auf der Fahrt beschlag. nahmt und nach Swincmündc cingc bracht. ) Brasilianer versenkt. Buenos Apres, 2. Mai. Von Madrid ist SamStag die Nachricht boil der Versenkung eiiws weiteren brasilianischen Daurpfers, nämlich des Sata" hier eingetroffen. Drei, ßig Ueberlebende wurden, wie es heißt, in San Lucar gelandet. Das Schiff befand sich aus der Fahrt von Rio de Janeiro nach Marseilles. Spanischer Tampser hinabbcfördert. Madrid, über Paris, 28. Mai. Der spanische Premierminister, Mar quis Pricto, gab gestern bekannt, daß der spanische Dampfer Bego. na" versenkt worden ist. Der Dam pser hatte einen Gehalt von 2,862 Tonnen.' Japaner retteten torpedierte Briten. Tokio, 28. Mai. Die Admira lität macht bekannt, daß das am 4. Mai im Mirtcliuecr torpedierte bri. tische Truppeuschisf Transylvania" von japanischen Zerstörern begleitet wurde. , Die Zerstörer griffen die U-Boote an. Die Japaner retteten 2,800 Viann der 3,000 Köpfe zäh. lenden Mannschaften. Drei japanische Kreuzer und Zcr störerflott"k, unterstützen die Alliier ten in ihrem Kampfe gegen die U Boote, eine Flotte im Mittelmeer, die andere im Atlantischen Ozean und die dritte im Jüdischen Ozean. Fordern Rußland auf, Urieg fortzusetzen! Hilfskrkegsministcr Z)aknbouitz macht den Bauern vor, das; jetzt die richtige Zeit da sei. Petrograd, 28. Mar. Die pro. visorische Regierung setzt alle Hebel in Bewegung, die Russen zur Fort, setzung des Krieges zu bewegen. Es ivird dem Volk vorgeredet, daß Deutschland den Russen die gewönne, ne Freiheit wieder uchmrn will. Deshalb soll mau wie ein Mann auf. stehen und gegen Deutschland zu Felde ziehen. Der Hilsskriegsinini. stcr Aakubowitz hielt heute vor dem hier tagenden Bauernkongicß eine Rede, i der er sagte, daß man die Früchte dcr Revolution verlieren würde, ivenn die Russen nicht sofort die Offensive ergreifen. Andere Ver- trctcr dcr Regierung sprachen sich in ähnlichem Sinne aus. Seitens dcr Redner wurde ausgc. sührt, daß die Deutschen den größten Teil ihrer Trlippen und Geschütze nach der Westfront befördert haben und wenn sie die Alliierten dort nie dcrgcrungen, werdcu sie sich auf Rußland werfen und dasselbe unter, werfen. Rußland hat jetzt aber gc iiug Kriegsmaterial an Hand, aber die Armee leidet Hunger, deshalb verlangt die Regierung die Unter stützung der Bauern, um die hun. gernde Armee mit Nahrungsmittel zu versehen und sich selbst in dieselbe einreihen zu lasse. Die ueuliche Rede des General stabschess Alexicfs wird von mehre, reu russischen Zeitungen scharf kriti. sicrt. So sagt z. B. die Börsen 'Gazette, daß Alcxieff über die Förde, rung: Friede ohne Annexion und Entschädigung" nichts drein zu reden habe. Sein Platz sei an dcr Front, und wenn ihm das nicht passe, dann könne er sich einen anderen Posten beim Heere wählen. Ueber die Ereignisse an der italieni schen Front meldete heute das öfter reichisch.ungnrische Kriegsamt: Un sere Verteidigungslinien halten; seit Beginn dcr zehnten Jsonzo-Osfensive habeil wir 13,000 Italiener gefan gen genommen. Der Kampf wird mit großer Erbitterung sortgesetzt. Am Samstag lahmten wir durch einen wuchtigen Gegenangriff das Vorrücken feindlicher Streitfrage aus den nahe Vodice gelegenen Hohen.
