Wenig ahnte zihm, als er nun mit feurigem Stre bersinn die militärifche Staffel in Alex-anders Heer schnell zu erklimmen begann, daß ein Taa kommen könne« rro ein höheres noch als sein Leben fiir den verehrten Fürsten von ihm gefordert werden könne. Es war an einem strahlenden Frühlingstag, mehr als ein halbes Jahr nach seinem Einzug in Bulgai nen. Die junge Frau von Maltitz stand in nngednldiger Erwartung an einem Fenster ihrer aus die Hauptstraße hinausgehenden Wohnung. Endlich, endlich kam das, woraus sie so unge duldig gewartet haben mußte. Ein Wagen hielt vor der Thür. Ein junges Paar sprang heraus. Eine Minute daraus lag die junge, blonde Frau leise ausschluchzend in Madame Maltiß’ Armen. Sieb mal da —- da kommt stibrigens so ein echtes, unverstäischtes lEremplar derjenigen Gattung, die idein Mädchenideal ausmachte, aus Junser Haus zu. Kanntest du ihn nicht svon Berlin ansi« s hedwig Stoiloss, die mit lächelnder IGeduld vorher alles über sich hatte Hergehen lassen, und kopfschüttelnd zu sihrem dunkeliiugigen Gatten hinüber «bliclte, war aus Nadinens lebhasten LZurus an das Fenster getreten. Es war aber wohl schon zu spiit gewesen, der Gast mußte schon ins Haus ge treten sein ——— und richtig, da kam ein elastischer Schritt schon aus die Tiir zu, dieselbe flog aus« und Paul Westap, strahlend von iterkeit, Le ibenslust. Gesundheit. bii schiin in sei Jner glänzenden bulgarischen Uni ssorin, stand aus der Schwelle —- stand, jstaunte und wurde blutrot. H ,,Hedwig Sydow,'« stotterte er lfreudig erschrocken, und auch die zblonde Oedwig errötete bis unter die i kraus en hellen Blondhaare. Dann aber shielten sie sich gleich daraus wie gute Kameraden herzlich bei den Händen ;und schauten sich in die Augen, als Hiönnten sie dem Zeugnis derselben nicht recht trauen. »Wie ist das möglich geworden, wie ist das möglichl" rief Paul einmal über das andere, und der herzlichen Freude über das Wiedersehen in der Fremde hörte man es deutlich an, daß sich in diese lein Tropfen Bitterkeit iidcr Hedwigs Vermöhlimg mischte. nicht mal verletzte Eitelkeit schien bei ihm ivachgerusen daß sie einen an deren so bald an den Platz gestellt, den er einst innegehabt zu haben wäh nen durste. Konstantin Stoiloss aber biß sich mit den weißen, spähen Zähnen den schwarzen Schnurrbart und rieb sich die mageren, braunen, behaarten Hände. Seine blißenden Augen schl - sen seindliche Blicke aus den h - schlanien jungen Ofsizien der ihn de tttichtiich üpeuoqir. Nadinens tinges Köpfchen ahnte instinktiv den herandräuenden Sturm und lenite ihn geschickt ab. »Sie wundern sich. Westen unsere Ded wig hier zu sehen. Paul wunderte sich, was nur die sanfte, fchmtegsame Hedwi , dieses Bild eines echten deutschen ädchens, an diesen trübfeligen Südländer ge fesselt. Wenig ahnte ihm, daß es die totale Gleichgültigleit an ihrem Ge schick gewesen, die sie seinem stürmt schen Werden nachgeben ließ —- nach dem ihre- Eltern plößlich beide gestor ben und sich der große Reichtum als vergängliches Gut erwiesen, von dem ihr nur ein sehr bescheidener Nest ge blieben war. Hedwig hatte Paul ge liebt, so ausschließlich, so mit der ganzen Kraft ihrer Seele, daß es fiir sie nach seiner Flucht kein Zukunfts glück mehr gab, und sie die Bewer bung ihres alten Berehrers nunmehr ganz apatifch, nur als eine Versori gung annahm. Ein Hehl daraus war ihm nicht gemacht worden; aber der äußerlich so kalte, innerlich so glühend leidenschaftliche Rumele hatte das oergätterte Mädchen um jeden Preis besi en wollen, und sich auch wohl mit er Hoffnung geschmeichelt, daß dem Eigentumsrecht auf das junge Weib die Seele desselben nach fol en müsse aul Westap hatte von alledem nicht die leiseste Ahnung. Der lleine Sergei, der mit seinem scharfen Verstande instinktiv fühlte daß er Unheil angerichtet, ohne doch zu wissen, bei wem oder wodurch, schmeichelte in dem Bemühen, gutzu machen, um die liebliche junge Frau herum. Die tleine Mascha its-: Wke ein Aeffchen dem Beispiel deg Brüder chens gefolgt und tletterte auf Hed wigs Knie, beide runden Aermchen um ihren Nacken schlingend. »Ein Madonnenbild. auf Ehre. eine Madonna, wie sie leibt und lebt!«« rief Paul Westap, ganz hinge rissen und gewohnt, alles zu sagen was er im Moment dachte oder fühlte. Der Rumele sah grüngelo aus vor innerem Aerger: die aufrasende Ei fersucht nahm ibm jeden Rest von vernünftiger Selbstbeherrschung. »Setz’ das Kind nieder, es verdirbt deine kostbare Toilette!« befahl U zornig wie ein tyrannischer Gebieter einer Untergebenen. Hedwig gehorchte sofort. Auf ihrem sprechenden Gesichichen, VII tödlich erblaßt war, lag aber ein sol cher Ausdruck ergebungsvoller Trauer, die Demütigunq trieb ihr so unwider stehlich die Tränen in die Augen, daß Paul sich wieder von dem Impuls sei nes guten, ritterlichen Herzens hinrei ßen ließ und ihr mit einer Inbrunst, einer Anzdauer die Hand küßte, die nur Mitgefiihl meinte, aber wie feu rige Anbetung aussah. , Oberst Maltitz «ahnte in den dräuenden Mienen des Advotaten, wie nahe ein Gewitterauebruch sein mochte, er tam demselben geschickt zu vor. »Meine Herrschaften, wir sind alle hier keine Luxusmenschem son dern —- wir Männer wenigstens — fleißige, von unseren Pflichten ab hängige Arbeitsmaschinen Die Da men müssen nun entschuldigen, wenn wir dieser Frühstückssitzun ein et was schnelles Ende machen. Und mit ernstem Nachdruck seyte er hinzu: »Wir wollen ernstlich danach trachten, uns gegenseitig verstehen und unsere nationalen Eigentümlichkeiten respek tieren zu lernen, und dann, hoffe ich, wird es zwischen uns Fünsen zu einer schönen entente aorckinle führen, wo die Landsleute die Frem den und die Fremden die Landsleute schätzen und wert halten werden. Und nun, meine Damen, überlassen wir Sie sich felbst.« »Meine Frau kommt mit inir«, ent schied Konstantin Stoilosf so scharf und unverbindlich wie möglich. Hedwig stand sofort geduldig auf, ließ sich den sunlelnden Schmelzdol man um die graziösen Schultern le gen, setzte ohne einen Blick in den Spiegel das Pariser Hütchen auf die silberblonden Haarwellen. Sie war mit Luxus, ja mit Raffinement ge kleidet, aber die Toilette trug nicht den Stempel charakteristischer, durch den persönlichen Geschmack bestimmter Eigenart wie bei Madame Nadine, die in ihrem lustigen Hauslleide un übertresflich schick aussah. Man ahnte sofort, daß alles von dem Dil tator Stoiloff in einem Pariser Mo dehaug nach seinem prunltvollen Sinn ausgewählt und seiner jun· en Gattin wie einem Kleiderständer uf die graziöse Gestalt gelegt war.
