Der alte Justizrat Vorderg pflegte ncnn man ihn nach Menschen und singen fragte, die nur noch in seiner (·-rinnerung lebten, die folgende Epi sssoe zu erzählen. Bis in die zwanziger Jahre lebte j:s. einem kleinen thüringischen Nest ii äußerster Zurückgezogenheit ein irnsionierter sächsischer Hauptmann « -ie nächsten Nachbarn wußten nichts im ihm, als daß der Grautopf, der Hist völlig gelähmt, von einer Ver .- andten wie ein Kind gepflegt wer 2 n müsse, Jnvalide von Dreizehn sei uid eigentlich mehr zu den toten von Tkipzig als zu den Lebendigen ge 1,ire. Das hatte seine Richtigkeit. Aber iikemand hätte sagen können, welche s·«-.«:htbare Berstümmlung ihn unter die Krüppel geworfen habe. Jn der Tat hatte keine Kugel ihn niederge 7issen, kein feindlicher Pallasch ihn gestreift. Mit heiler Haut war er vom Platz getragen worden. Die Schande hatte ihm die gesunden Kno chen im Leibe von innen heraus zer schlagen. Das war so getomment Jedes Schulkind weiß, daß in der Schlacht bei Leipzig ein paar tausend Sachsen von Napoleon zu den Ber bündeten übergegangen sind. Jch will nicht darüber reden, warum sie es ta ten. Die Hauptsache wird gewe sen sein, daß langunterdriickter Ty taynnenhaß sich endlich Lust machte. Em Heldenstücl ist’s nicht gewesen. «hr König hat von nichts gewußt. cr hat sich von Napoleon nasfühsen lassen bis zuletzt. Am andern Morgen erst, als zum Rückzug geblasen wurde Bat der Kaiser dem Friedrich August im «Lever« gesagt, es stünde schlecht mit der ,,Bataille«, das Nähere würde ihm Friedrich Wilhelm von Preußen gleich persön ich sagen, er selbst habe keine Zeit dazu. Und kurz daraus hat der betrogene König ganz ver duxt mit abgezogenem Hut vor dem Sieger gestanden, der nicht an die Krempe gerührt hat. Aber ich will nicht von den Sach sen und ihrem Könige reden, sondern von dem Hauptmann von Bellin. Das war eigentlich kein Sachse, sondern ein nachgeborener deutscher Adliiger aus Schwedisch-Pommern. Jn den letzten Jahren des alten Fritz war er als blutjunger Leutnant unter höchster Ungnade aus dem preußischen Heeresverband entlassen worden. Eine Schurlerei ist im Spiel gewesen, und der Dummejungenstreich lohnt das Erzählen nicht. Arm wie eine Kirchenmaus hat er seinen ad ligen Degen in eine sächsische Schei de gesteckt und unter Friedrich August sein Heil versucht. Bei Jena hat er noch einmal Seite an Seite mit seinen alten Kameraden fechten dürfen, dann mußte er es Stirn gegen Stirn. Wie es in seinem Her zen rumort hat, als die Sachsen ge gen die Preußen zogen, danach hat niemand gefragt. Der sächsische Kö nig hat befohlen, und der sächsische Osfizier hat seine Schuldigteit getan Damit basta. Viel Dank hat er nicht gehabt, atser ein langsames Mante mcnt. Als Grautops noch hat der Pommer die abgetragenen Hauvts rnannsepauletten aus den Schultern gehabt. Da ist der Völketfrilhling 1813 mit Macht über die deutschen Lande gekommen. Und auch in dem alten Ponrmernherzen sind wuchernde Trie be aufgegangen, aber sie haben mehr als Dornen getragen, die ihm inwen dig die Brust zerstachen. Nicht einmal die Gedanlentünde hat er durchgehen lassen· auf die Niederlage seines Kö nigs zu dessen. Und als et das bren nende Gefühl doch nicht in sich ans-« treten konnte, hat er’s wie ein Brand rnal ans seiner Soldatenehre empfun den. Der Hauptmann von Vellin preßte die Fäuste kampf baft gegn die Brust. Er verstand nicht, was um ihn her vorging. Ir gend jemand schrie neben ihm: »Vor wärts siir Deutschland!« Irgend ie mand riß ihn am Arm vorwärts. Ta llang der Ruf wieder. Tausende schrien ihn stürmisch, trotzig und jauchzend in das Getümmel. Nun verstand er. Alles Blut schoß ihm zu Kopfe. Aber er wehrte sich nicht. Taumelnd wie im Traum schritt er vorwärts. Er siihltc die Erlösung. Er konnte sie fühlen, weil -er sie nicht gerufen hatte. Sie war »du und vergetvaltigte ihn. Er des-Ir tierte nicht. Etwas Gewattiges be gab sich, das der Einzelne nicht ver antwortete. Ein einzelner tann de sertieren, hier war tein Einzelner. Hier waren Tausende. Hier war ein Volk. Ein Volk desertiert nicht. Das Ereignis wuchs ihm ins lRiesengroße, Ungemessene Ein Ete smentarereignis brach über die Fran szosen herein wie eine Sintflut over s ein Erdbeben — ungerufen, ungeachtet « und unwiderstehlich. s Der Hauptmann von Bellin war imit einem Mal wieder jung. Er war nicht mehr der sächsiselje Haupt mann. Dort flogen die preußischen Adler durch Rauch und Blut. »Vor wärts siir Deutschland!« Der Leut nant des großen Friedrich war er-· wacht und hatte den sächsischen Hauptmann niedergerissen. Mit wild klopfenden Pulsen ließ er sich vor wärtstreiben. Da kamen die Tausende von Ben nigsens Linien ins Stocken. Adjutum ten sprengten herüber. Ein hoher Of sizier preschte heran. War er ein Preuße? Ein Riisse? War es Ben nigsen selbst? Sein Arm fuhr mit befehlshaberischer Geste durch die Luft. Kommandoworte schallt-en Ein Ruck ging durch die zusammenn drängten Reihen der Sachsen. Ein Murmeln lief durch die Massen. Er regt, zornig, entrüstet, erbittert tim gen hundert Stimmen durcheinander. Was ging da vorn vor? Der Hauptmann von Vellin stürzte vor. Leidenschastlich erregt drängte er sich in den Kreis der Kommandies renden. Was ging hier vor? Do hörte er ein paar Worte. Nur ein paar aus dem Zusammenhang ge rissene Worte, aber sie sagten alles Etn sächsischer·Major hatte sie ge s; rochen und zornig dabei die Degen s.«heide aus die Erde gestoßen: ,,Sind » wir Hundessötter!? Hinter die Lini ;en? Nicht mittämpsen dürfen —- es ist . . .« f i » Hauptmann von Vellin hörte nichts »weiter. Alles verschwamm um i!7n. ,E.r wußte genug. Man achtete si jnicht wert, Seite an Seite mit ehr Ilichen Soldaten zu kämpfen. Sie » waren Ueberläufer, Ausreißer, lrieass Igefangene Descrieure, Hundsfotter...« ) Er fühlte keinen Augenblick etwas von dem ivogenden Zorn, der in den Icndern ausschwoli. Er empfand dsc Beschimpfung, den Schlag ins Gesicht wie sie, aber es peitschte ihn nicht auf, es zerfchmettette ihn. Jiih ernüchtert fühlte er die Ziichtigung, gegen die er wehrlos war wie ein Schandbube our dein Mittel. . Der wilde, tolle Traum war vor über. Es war lein Volk mehr mn ihn« das Gottesaericht hielt. Schlimmer erging es dem Maschinis sten George McHenrh bei Benson Cornets in La Moure County, N. D. Als dieser den Deckel des Kes sels seiner Dreschmaschine erklomm, glitt er ab, stürzte in das Getriebe Und wurde zutode gequetscht, bevor die Maschine zurn Stillstande gebracht werden konnte. Durch den in einer Sand grube an der Stadtgrenze von Pas saic, N. J» erfolgten Erdrutsch erlitt ein junger Mann namens Willtam Grissin einen jähen und entse lichen Tod, dem sein Mitarbeiter, ames Pattem von Myrtle Ave., nur mit tnapper Not entging. Der ihnen dro henden Gefahr unbewußt, hatten die beiden Männer eine etwa sechs Fuß breite Fläche ausgegraben, als ohne die geringste Vorsorge das Erdreich sich löste. Griffin, gegen ein hinter rad des in der Nähe stehenden Wa gens geschleudert, verschwand unter dem stürzenden Sand, von dem der etwa drei oder vier Fuß entfernte Patten bis zum Halse etngehitllt wur de. Eine Leiter wurde schnell her beigeschasft und einer der Nachbarn stieg in die Oeffnung, um ein Leben zu retten. Unten angekommen, fand der Lebensretter, daß eine Zieae in das Wasser gefallen war.
