One of the best ways to reach the farmer trade Is to advertise In the country newspapers. These reach the bulk of the farmers in their territory, especially the progressive ones, and will bring your stuff to their attention lu a wny that nothing else will do Do not eouline your advertising entire ly to the want ad. page. When you have stuff to sell get rid of It quickly by attractively got up nds. Merchants have found newspaper advertising a necessary part of their business It la Just as necessary to the fanner who has stuff to sell. How should the pub lic know that the farmer has some thing to sell If he keeps the faet ti se fret V A large number of the people who are Interested In your ptocls will drive over to see It. Hnve the stock lh.it Is for sale divided up into small bum lies of uniform size, as they show off bet ter In this way. As a general rule. It Is best to h'a: the smallest one.? Never misrepresent your sitiff but do not hesitate to point out all the good points that the animals po ess It will be advantageous lu establish Ing u penuuuput trade to guarantee the nuimals to be as represented, the males to be breeders and the females to be safe with young If sold that way. You will occasionally get an animal back. It Is true, but the loss on a few such animals will be more than made up by the Inci eased confidence people will have In you. Kor nusworlitir such Inquiries ns come by mall letter heads and return em elopes are a great advantage Printed stationery gies a bu-.liu- mIU air to a letter and makes the I , Jrei think he Is dealing with a In.-lne. man. A cut of some of ,ui t -t an Imals adds to the attractiveness of i'i letter head Such a cut can be 1 1 in from a good photoguipli for not more than Sl.riO. It Is best to have the printer older It for you, as be will know the stjle that will go best with the paper jou are using. If one of the boys or glrln has a Kodak a print of one or tw of your best animals in . losed with replies will give the pro. -P'fllvo buyer a better Idea of what t !mo to offer than an. description .-i:d. lie honest In your deserlp- t',.'iit and do not hesitate to state the animal's faults fully Selling to Breeders. As your home trade grows and you gradually work Into a higher grade or stock you will begin to want higher prices. To get them you must sell to breeders. To reach thene In large numbers ndvei Using in bne or more of the agricultural papers that ill dilute In your territory Is necessary, A sim ple card will bring many replies. When you have something special to offer n large ad, will prove piofltable, Of course most of the sales made lu this way will be by letter, though an occasional man will come to see the stuff. If you live more than a mile from town it will pay to make arrange ments with the U eryman to bring out unexpected visitors at your expense Little things like flits help to create n favorable Impression. Where there are many Inquiries to answer a typewriter Is 11 great advantage, as letters written lu this wny ure mm-h neuter ami more businesslike. With n few days' prac tice one of the boys or gills will be able to write at least as fast as by baud mid put out a very neat letter. Rebuilt typewriters of the standard makes are more satisfactory than th cheaper machines. cry good rebuilt machines vu be bought at pnVes ri'iij, lug from $2." to sfno. Stock to be sold to breeders must bi In a little better condition than for tin farmer trade. Selling on the General Market. The bulk of tlje stock grown Is. ol course, sent to the geueial market. It is a great advantage In marketing tc be able to sell lu carload lots, as It this way you can ship the stock your self and get all there Is lu It, The time to sell cattle, hogs and sheep depends largely upon the prjee of feed and the condition of the market. This Is some thing that can only bo told by loug ex pcrlence. As n gencrnl rule, feeden lose their nerve and sell n little toe soon, as is shown by the tlood of hall fat cattle that comes on to the market nt certain seasons of the year. Much of this stuff is bought up by fecdera living near the big markets und the. fattening process finished. If these men can afford to do this on high priced land aud feed, the farmer can certain ly afford to put on 11 little tnoro fiuisk before selling in the flrst place. Cattle that Imve been fattened on grass should bo shut up In the yard nt least two days before shipment nnd fed timothy hay nnd onts. Cattle that have been hnvlug dry feed should have the grain ration changed to onts and the roughage to timothy hay for tho twenty-four hours preceding shipment. Do not give more than half a grain ra tion for the last feed before they arc loaded and do not give any salt for a few days before shipment. Do not wnter heavily for a few hours before loading. Hed the car well with bright straw and do not crowd It too full Much of the nrt of getting the cattle on to the market with little shrinkage depends upon quiet handling. If they are to be driven nny considerable dls tnnee It should be In the cool of the day. They should be loaded as quietly as possible. Where cattle are to be on the road more than twelve hours the racks should be tilled with timothy hay. As soon as the cattle are unloaded nt the stockyards they should be wntered and then given 11 feed of good hay, to gether with some ear corb. He sure that the trough Is full of wnter before the cattle begin to drink or they will suck themselves full of wind Instend of water. Turn the stock over to somo rellnble commission mnn to be sold nnd be nt hand yourself to see how it Is done and to look after your own interests. You will get better service If you employ the same commission man each year than you will by cluing Ing around. The same general rules for prepara tion for shipment will npply to sheep and hogn as well n.s to cattle. If it happens that n load of hogs has to be kept overnight In the yards before being sold be sure to bed them well, ns lack of bedding will cnuse as much shilrknge as lad; of feed. In ease you do not have enough stock of your own to ship lu carload lots you can often go In with one or mere of your neighbors to make up a I'kmI. Many of the farmers' co-operative companies make a practhe of col lei ting nnd shipping hogs for their members. The coinpnuy receives enough commission to pay for the I rouble, nnd the farmers receive bet Ksass-X2 UfnflUQIfc JU'F I wi felall I IO. XY5III. Selling to lo- al buyers to advantage demands u lose Htudy of market conditions. Selling Horses. Many farmers make the mistake of marketing their horses too young. It , rarely pays to sell it colt before It Is ' trained. A little time spent durlug . Hi,. ,..ii.. I.. ...t. .I.. .. This training should begin even before the colt l.s w cniicd, as he can be ban died more easily at that time. lie should be first taught to lead, then to obey the word and rein and later to pull, back and stand without tying. As a finishing touch he should be taught not to fear nutomobiles or cars. After the colt Is two jears old he will do enough work to pay for his keep. It will generally be most profit able to keep him until he Is full grown before selling him. The more flesh a draft horse carries the better be will sell. The Increased weight Is worth at least 25 cents a pound, Mid the fat will cover many defects.
