Chicago Grain , — ■ — ■ - —-J Chicago. March 1.—Report* frfim Washington that President Cooliilge will raise the present tariff on wheat from 30 cent* a bushel to 46 cents, and a aomswhat sensationally bullish esti-uoi1 on farm reserves by i local crop expert led to a much Unproved demand fn the pit today, prices advancing briskly and Closing ut top levels Whest Closed \ to 14c higher; corn was 4 to *io advanced; oats were 4 to 4c higher, and rye ruled \c up. In his March 1 report R. W. Snow claimed thnt there remain 94.000,000 bushels wheat In this country to cover export demands for the next four months and to furnish a carryover at the end of the evop year. Last year tha carryover was 102.000.000 on July 1. To many trader* It immediately became apparent thnt the United States has been on a do mestic basis for some time. Trad* in the corn pit -broadened ouj. Pressure from local bears carried the market off during the first hour, but there came luto the pit much better sup port from commission houses, represent ing to a considerable degree outside trade, and price* rallied briskly later on. 1 Oats wore helned by Hie advance In other grains. Commission houses took hold rather aggres*ively, and pressure soon waned. Rye firmed with other grain* Cover ing by shorts was one of the late fea ture*. Provisions were under scattered pres sure. Lard closed 24 to 7Vs lower and ribs were 7 4c lower. Pit Note*. Chicago, March 1.—One of Ihe feature? in the wheat pit was the more extensive buying here against sales at Winnipeg by operators who were undoing spreads. This action was presumably augmented by the news from Washington that the presi dent would undoubtedly come to the aid of the wheat farmer within the next few1 days by ralslhg the present tariff. The report on farm reserves bv B. W. Snow showed 123,000.oon bushels, com pared with 153.00o.000 bushels Inst year. He pointed put that stocks e-ist of the Rockies are 37.000.000 bushels smaller than a year ago. while west of the Rock ies there are 6.000,000 bushels more. For many months bulls have been claiming a shortage of good milling grades of wheat cast of the Rockies. Reserves of wheat In the northwest are especially light, according to Mr Snow, totaling 1*.593.000 bushels, against 44.034, 000 bushels last year. Ho maintains that present farm holdings in the spring wheat territory will barely cover seed re quirements within the next month or so. Primary receipts of wheat during the last week totaled 4.509.000 bushels, com pared with 4.94*.000 bushels last week and 5,742.000 bushels a year ago. Re ports from the southwest indicate that the crop there is in good shape for grow ing weather because of the abundance of moisture it has been subjected to. Chicago Stocks. Prices generally tended higher in re sponse to the tax revision outlook, al though K point drops in Virginia-Carolina with warrants, and Wickwire Spen cer Steel 7s had an unsettlng effect on the industrial list. Resumption of conferences on the Y;r glnia-Cafollna situation caused further liqutdaton of the company s bonds. The 7V»s wth warrants 1 ell back to 41 within fractional range of rhe record low level, and the 7s lost a Point. No explanation was forthcoming for the break in Wick-, wire Spencer bonds which sold at 64 rep resenting a loss of almost IS points in the I set two w'ceks and a new low price for the year. Norfolk and Western convertible f.s which had been subjected to profit taking after their recent burst of strength, re. turned their advance with a gain of 1 V* points.
