Chicago, Feb. 27.—Com again com manded the lead in the upward swing of grain prices today, reaching new highs for the July and September and closing at the beat leveia so far for all months. Wheat was helped by bullish estimates on farm reserves which, together with the stability in corn, offset the bearish ln fiuen< e of foreign news Wheat closed ai$24e higher; corn was ftv 7*c advanced; oats were *4 ©He up. and rye ruled advanced. there was sufficient commission house demand for wheat on the dips to ab sorb the offerings and force shorts to cover at the clos". Liverpool wheat fu tures dropped % tt 7% pence, duo to in creased offerings of Argentine and Man itoba wheat. The seaboard confirmed ex port sales of 200.000 bushels of wheat. Corn was strong throughout although experiencing a sharp dip at midday, duo to the report of a local expert showing lurni reserves larger than a year ago. There was improved commission house demand for • urn. and early sellers Were forced to cover finally. Demand tor dry corn here was better and premiums firm. oats were helped by the strength In other grains. .Moderate hedging pressure was reported, but commission house rest ing orders to buy were able to” take care of what was offered. Trade in the rye pit continued feature less, the trend of wheat being adhered to. Provisions were easy most of the ses sion owing to a lack of support. Lard was 2*ac to 5c lower and ribs were un changed. nt sot**. Chicago. Feb. 27.—Private estimates today on farm reserves and country ele vator supplies In tha United States Indi cate that the total supply of wheat in the country at this time is below last year. A local expert estimates stocks :n the country were 37,000*000 bushels less than last year as of March 1. The visi ble supply Is 17,000.000 bushels over last vear. so that total supplies accounted for 'would be placed at 20.000,000 bushels less than a year ago. Crop damn pe reports were again re ceived from Illinois, many claiming exten sive winter killing, but to date damage complaints have had but little effect on the trend. The movement of wheat to terminals the past few days ha* decreased considerably, and Is now well under a >esr ago. „ , . The recent weakness at Liverpool has hsd but temporary effect on the local trend. It being regarded as a natural re action there, due to the settlement of the dock strike In the United Kingdom ports. , Trade In the wheat pit continues only moderate. Of late developments at Wash ington have tended to check interest '1 he AlcNary-Haugen bill has been reported favorably by *he senate agricultural com mittee, and while few In the trade be lieve the bill has much chance of becom ing a law, Rt the same time enough un certainty prevails to keep many traders out of the market. Feb. 27.—Stork prices dis played a better tone in toda>'a dull mar ket’ bear traders inaugurating an exten sive covering movement in the late after noon after an early campaign of short selling had failed to make much headway. The relatively light volume of trading was attributed In some quarters to tlm fact that several large traders., wintering in Florida, temporarily had switched their speculative operations from the stock to the cotton market. Hxtreim* weakness of Yirglnla-Carolina chemical issues, was one of the features I of the da> s trading. The common stock established! a new low record at 3% and then rallied to 4%, where It was off nearly L points on the day. The prefern d sank to 12%, also a new low and ihen rallied to 13%. off 3%. as compared with the year's high of 34%. Hate buying cf the steel shares was Influenced ’ by the weekly trade reviews which indicated that February bookings would equal those of January, the fall ing off in the east being offset hv the sustained activity in the west. United States Steel common, selling ex dividend, dosed at 102%. Bethlehem. Crucible. Re public and United States Steel closed fractionally higher. United States Cast Iron Pipe common broke nearly 4% points to 64 as n result of a New Jersey court, decision holding that no dividends could he paid on the common stock until af ter back dividends of about 1700.000 on th» preferred had been cleaned up The stock rallied to 66 at the close. The pre ferred closed 2 points higher at 87% after having sold as hieh as 89, Copper shares, which turned weak yes terday. following the omission of the Ana conda dividend and continued reactionary In today's early dealings, steadied later on publication of London cables, announc ing higher copper metal prices In Great Britain Directors of the Kennecott and I Inspiration Copper companies meet tomor row for dividend action. Baldwin and American Can closed at 122% and 1124- respectively, each up about a point, after having sold about 2 points below their final quotation* The late rally was started by heavy short cov ering in these issues. Studehaker. an other soca lied pivotal stock, also closed about a point higher, at 1.01%. nil shares failed to make any appre ciable response to reports of further Im provement in the statistical position of 1 ho industry. The restricted trading in these Issues was again attributed to the f»ar of further unfavorable development ;t t the Washington oil Inquiry and reports that Senator La Follette shortly would introduce a measure regulating the in dustry . .. Trading In railroad shores was rather s'uggiah. chief interest centering In the demand for Norfolk A Western, which Hosed nearlv a point higher, at 1104 rn expectation of another extra dividend this spring. The recent increase In Penn sylvania railroad stockholders was Inter preted in some quarters as an Indication of Increasing public interest in Invest ment stocks. Call money opened at 4% P*r cent and then advanced to 44 per cent, where ft Hosed The time money and commercial paper markets were quiet, with no change In rates _ , Fxtreme weakness of French and Bel »‘an francs, apparently based on aelling influence by the resignation of the Be’. s an cabinet on a vote over the economic pact with France, was the feature of the foreign exchange market.
