Duty of 40 Tor Cent Urged
On Foreign Product Ger

Competitor.
lly The Associated Prese.
Wa.hinRion, Dec. 17. American
manufacturer! of toyi and ilollg
asked the senate finance - committee
today not only for protection against
German and Japanese competition;
but also for the exclusion of these
articles which are the product of
child labor. They asked for a duty
of 40 per cent of the value of the
toys and dolls based on the prices
prevailing in the American market.
German competition is the most
serious factor, they asserted, and im
porli from that country are seriously
felt. The American industry has
slumped SO per cent, it was testified,
despite price reductions .ranging
from 25 to 50 per cent. Doll mak
ing has been even more seriously af
fected, the witnesses declaring that
of the 134 doll factories in the coun
try a year ago, only 12 remain.
E. M, Johnson of New York,
speaking for American manufacturers
of imitation pearls and specialties,
urged that the duties on these arti
cles, as proposed in the Fordncy bill,
be retained. He exhibited, imitation
articles manufactured in this country
and pave the wholesale prices, re
marking that the retailers " "get the
profits."
"As usual." said Senator Smoot,
rmuhliran. Utah.
Asking for a cut of more than 50
per cent in the duty proposed in the
Fordney bill on novelty jewelry,. D.
J. Gallert of New York told the
' committee that the jewelry industry
was so well established in this coun
try that it needed little protection. ;
