American manufacturer! of toyi and ilollg asked the senate finance - committee today not only for protection against German and Japanese competition; but also for the exclusion of these articles which are the product of child labor. They asked for a duty of 40 per cent of the value of the toys and dolls based on the prices prevailing in the American market. German competition is the most serious factor, they asserted, and im porli from that country are seriously felt. The American industry has slumped SO per cent, it was testified, despite price reductions .ranging from 25 to 50 per cent. Doll mak ing has been even more seriously af fected, the witnesses declaring that of the 134 doll factories in the coun try a year ago, only 12 remain. E. M, Johnson of New York, speaking for American manufacturers of imitation pearls and specialties, urged that the duties on these arti cles, as proposed in the Fordncy bill, be retained. He exhibited, imitation articles manufactured in this country and pave the wholesale prices, re marking that the retailers " "get the profits." "As usual." said Senator Smoot, rmuhliran. Utah. Asking for a cut of more than 50 per cent in the duty proposed in the Fordney bill on novelty jewelry,. D. J. Neb.. Dec. 17. rSnerial. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. -Smith of this city celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a family reunion of their children and their families. Of the five daughters and one son all but one daughter, residincr in California, were present. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were married at :: Covington, Va., in 1871. The reading room is in use all the time . and is crowded every night. Prohibition No Joke Federal Judge Proves Lincoln, Dec, 17. (Special.) Uncle Sam didn't label "joke" after the Volstead prohibition liw and he looks upon it seriously, according to a statement made from the bench by Federal Judge T. C. Monger as he added a six-months' Jail sentence to a $400 fine for a violator of the law. "You may read a lot of jokes about prohibrtion in the newspapers and at the movies," said the judge, "but congress didn't mean the law for a joke, and congress put it up to the courts to enforce the law.
