In testifying as to detail con nected with the govcrnment'i tir clae of the Tanana Mine rail road. Mr. Ballaine made Makmmts which Mr. Joalin. who had con tructrd a part of the railroad, chal lenged and Ihainnan New had dif ficulty in restoring order. Attorney General Kustgird of AJafcka presented arguments in sup port of the New bill, which propose to consolidate government uureaus in Alaska under the interior depart ment.' J!e emphasized the impor tance of establishing steamship com munication under the bill between the terminal of the Alaska railroad and a Pacific port in the United States, asserting present facilities were inadequate. The controversy arose over. Jos lin's resentment of Iiallaine'a asser tion that he had obtained from the government for Joslin's railroad, a value in excess of its cost.
