Novelties for the
. Buffet Supper
Always save the water in which
j rice, potatoes or spaghetti have been
cooked and use it to dilute canned
; condensed vegetable or tomato soup.
The directions call for dilution with
an equal amount of water, but at
least half again as much of the thicK
vegetable water can be used, making
the resulting product more nutri
tious, mortf palatable and capable of
serving more persons.
Baked rice croquettes are easier
to prepare than the ordinary fried
kind, are more healthful, and afford
pleasing change in the menu. They
are especially good made of scraps
of ham or tongue, but beef, lamb or
veal may also be used. To make,
run the meat through a food chop
per. Boil rice and add when about
half cooked, salt, paprika, chopped
parsley. Onion and chopped celery.
Boil until all the liquid is absorbed.
The rice should be fairly sticky in
consistency so that the croquettes j
will keep their shape. Add the
' chopped meat, shape like croquettes
and bake in a brisk oven in a w"ell-
trreased bakinsr pan. Put about
.quarter teaspoonful of "bacon fat on
ich croquette. They will not need
to be turned or basted, and in about
20 minutes or a half hour will have
a crisp, brown coating all over and
be ready to serve, garnished with
parslejr and small balls of current or
cranberry jelly.

Problems That Perplex
Answered by
BEATRICE FAIRFAX.
A Chance for Philosophy.
Dear Miss- - Fairfax: Tor six
months -I have been Koins with a
young man seven years my senior,
whom I love very much, and from
what ho tolls me my love Js reclpro.
cated. However, It Is not all amooth
Balling, as I have a problem before
mo and I hope that you will help
ne solve it.
Although my friend and I are
free to go out with whom we please,
I have voluntarily given up all my
male friends because of him. I have
told him all about my previous boy
friends and also that I have given
them up.
Through a mutual acquaintance
I find that he continues to eo about
with another girl whom lie knew
before we became friends. What
hurts me Is this: Why hasn't he
told me about this girl? Especially
after I had, so to speak, mado a
clean breast of everything. I doubt
very much whether he has told the
other girl about 'me so you can
readily see that wo are both groping
In the dark. It is quite Impossible
for me to broach the subject, as he
does not know I know anything of
his other friend. ROSE.
Possibly you- take the young man
and his love too seriously. Possibly
you do not trust him enough. Either
accept tho situation -philosophically,
and resume your friendly relations
with other men, or accept It and go
on shoping that you will come some
day to be the only girl. If you find
that doubt and qiteatlons are chang
ing you and your attltudo toward the
man, why not have a frank and per
fectly good natured talk about it?
You needn't be melodramatio and
give tho third party away.
Tho Engagement Ring.
Dear Miss Fairfax: I am a far
mer boy of 25, and have been read
ing the problems, answered by you,
and I think you -give aplendid ad
vice. Now my problem la this. I
have been going with a girl about 16
months and we are to be married
soon. Now I want to give her a
ring for engagement, and I do not
know what kind to get. A diamond
would be the most proper, but they
are so expensive that I almost think
we could use that money to better
advantage later on to furnish our
house. Please tell ma what to do.
Thanking you In advance.
' JUST A FARMER LAD.
I am sure you are a fine lad, but
you are making a mistake right In
the beginning of your romance. Why
don't you let the girl help decide a
question which probably means more
to her than to you. There are too
many men who decide what is good
for a woman and then expect her to
like it. If tha girl, is worthy of you,
she will not ask you to get anything
for her which you cannot afford. She
will always be happier with her ring
and it will mean more to her, if she
knows you tried to please her.
My suggestion ia that you talk It
over with her. Giva her your views
and let her express hers.' Then do
what feeems most desirable. Some
girls never have a nice piece of Jew
elry in their lives except the engage
ment ring, xou couia get a good.
.small diamond for not a large sum of
money and if It is a diamond she
wants, I say get it for her. It may
add a great deal to her happiness.
I do not mean that the girl 1"
marrying you for the ring, but the
fact that you want to please her, that
there la enough romance in you to
forget tha economies which will have
to coma later, really has something
beautiful and appealing about It. .
If yeur girl la very thrifty by na
ture, she herself may prefer a less
expansive ring- than a diamond, but
let her be the one to suggest that.
And always, all through your mar
ried life, discuss matters which con
cern both of you with each other.
If you do buy a diamond, get a
pood one. If you cannot afford a
large one, get a small one but do
get a genuine one.
Mrs. B. O. C: You might be able
to market your fancy work with
some of the department stores, or
Place It with someone of the bazars
held from time to time by local or
ganisations. There is no woman's
exchange in Omaha such as there is
in some cities for disposing of such
things.
