When you carry a horse-chestnut in your pocket to cure or ward off rheumatism it only shows that you have not quite outgrown the Iree worship of your ancestors. That trees. were the abode of supernatural beings, if not gods themselves, was a belief common to all our European progenitors, and the lingering rem nants of it arc frequently found in modern superstitions. It existed in such strength, even down to classi cal days, that ancient Jupiter of the Roman capitol . was nothing more nor less than an oak tree."' In those old days certain trees were supposed to exert a benificent influence upon certain diseases. Thus the ash as a' tree-god cured hernia and its leaves were a specific against the bite of serpents. In some parts oi England today there is a custom of passing a child afflicted with con genital ,hernia through the growing ash in expectation of a cure; and there is a New England superstition that a snake will not crowl under an ash tree. The chestnut tree god apparently specialized in rheumatism, for it was the true chestnut that was originally carried as a rheumatic antidote and, according to the American Fork-lore societv, that custom is still "some what general in the United States. But in New England and the middle west the horse-chestnut is the thing; probably because it is called a chest nut, looks like a chestnut especially like the chestnut of southern Europe and being larger than the true chestnut (Castaneal, ought to be a more powerful appeal to the chest nut tree god. BY HOLLAND. Six million individuals in the ("niled .States arc owners of scctiri lies of all kinds and particularly those which liae been issued by railroad companies. That figure is the estimate of investment brokers and statisticians who have been with care securing reports upon which they could base their esti mate of liic total number of indi vidual security holders. This in cludes of course banks, insurance companies and corporations which have invested some part of their surplus in securities. Another estimate which is as sumed to be reasonably correct fixes the number in each of the railroads, of stockholders who-e holdings are less lhan 100 shares as numbering in the aggregate much the larger part of those in the I'nited States who hold securities. So also it has been discovered that approximately one-third of all who arc in posses sion of securities of less than imi shares arc women, Many Women. The Pennsylvania Railroad com pany, the New York Central an 1 the 'New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad company have a large number of women recorded ; ti,;r Unnls a owners of shares of these railroads, many of them owners of less than 100 shares apiece. These figures nial clear ine terert which the public apnrt from the wage earners and the management of the railroad companies. Is now making evident and must mnMnue to make evi dent until the railway difficulties are eliminated. Hut the pnhlic is "" rep resented by any association with on- ex ception, or 1-y any authoritative hod . It stands apart. The rn I Iro d "' earners are represented hy their in. - o organizations. S Pavles Warfiebl of Baltimore is presi dent This Is linown the National Association of Owners of Railroad secur ities' This organization Is already Justl fvlng its creation. It. is taking nctlv and e'urnest part In the efforts which are now underway lo secure satlsfa-tnry ad justment of the railroad situation. A Slrong Appeal. This action Is Illustrated by the appeal made hy the association through Us president. Mr. Warfleld, to the four or ganisations of railroad employes to Join with representatives of this association In an attempt to get a perfect under standing of the situation and when thet is done to discover, 1f possible, the method by which the railroads may be restored to a prosperity which will be of such Importance to that great moss of the citizens who are directly or in directly tho owners of railway securities. This national association of owners of railway securities represents about tl 2 OOO.OOO.'OOO of railroad securities which are in the ownership of tho public The larger part of these securities are bonds. Upon the. income received from Invest ment In these bonds many persons de pend for the means by which they meet their living expenses. If there is riefau t , r l,i blnrt an,! such default has already beiiiin and may be Increased. ji.i,. mil In many cases actual ..ifferlnir will follow. It is not difficult in trace the effect of this loss of In- - ..nn .an.,,1 hiinlnes condltlons. Therefore It is confidently asserted that after all It is not the employes of the railroads nor the employers even w n.. are chiefly concerned but it is the Amer- '"tr. Warfleld asserts that the groes reve. nues of the railroads of th country hav been reduced to a point where there ara not sufficient net earnings to meet flitea charges. He might have said, as m fact he really Intimates, that if this con dltion continues something like universal bankruptcy awaits the railroad of tnt United States. It Can Be Tlemedled. Mr. Davies has been occupied for mor than a year with a study of the railroad situation. He discovered early that tne chief factor In this situation so far a tht effect of it is concerned is the American public. Until this assoclaton was organ ized this public was without unified voles or any other lhan Indirect influence. Now it is In the interest of the public and therefore of the country at large that an attempt will be made to put an end to the present weakness In the situation, which, is due in part to the lack of co-ordination between the organiiation, which adjuat rates which Is the Interatate Commerce commission and the other organisation which deals with wages, which la the United States Labor board. Presumably the situation will be cleared in great measure from its present difficul ties, if there be readjustment or ratee, which will be satisfactory to ahlpper and to those who use the railroada for paa senger service and if there also b coin cidently readjustment of wagea. In addl- t on. Mr. Davies. Senator cummin anci others, are convinced that the management of the railroads must establish greater economies and this is believed to be prac ticable. Mr. Davies say that for the first time in American transportation history the railroads ot the United State a a whole are not earning the interest on the aggregate amount of their outsts.nding bonds. This is a danger which the railroad bondholders ot the United State will, act ing in concert and co-ordination, strive to bring speedily to an end, and Mr. Davie believe' can bring to an end. because the cause of these difficulties 11 not funda mental.
