The impor tant incident in today's news, which did not become known until after the stock exchange had closed, was a sharp rise ;n the reserve percent age, both of the New York federal bunk and of the reserve system as a whole. The system ratio of cash holdings to note and deposit liabil ities rose in the last week, from 49.9 per cent to 50.8, the ratio thus more than recovering the decrease of the preceding week and reach ing the hTghcst figure since Septem ber. 1919. At the New York bank the re serve percentage rose from 40 1-2 per. cent to 421-4, the highest since September and only 1 1-2 per cent below the high mark of 1920. A still more striking comparison is with the first week of Marcli-a year ago; the ratio of the system is 8 1-4 per cent higher than it then was and only i a traction unuer tne corresponding date in 1919, while that of the New York hink is 4 1-8 per cent above last year. Rediscounts Decrease. Not less Interesting than last week's marked Improvement of position were th causes for it. Rediscounts of the entlro system decreased nearly $45,000,000, to tho lowest of the year, end they have been reduced $476,000,000 since the high mark of November, whereas In the same perod a year ago there occurred an Increase of $269,000,000. This Is deflation of credit on a substantial scale, and it is accom panied by $9,000,000 induction of note cir culation, which is now $362,000,000 less than In Christmas week, the net decrease in tlie corresponding weeks a year ajo having been only $2 7,000,000. The Now York bank cut down Its rediscounts $36, 000.000 last week, thouch Increasing its note circulation $5.(00,000 and it made a substantial gain in cash reserves. Presumably these statements show tho result, not only of dull time's in business, but cf continuing liouklatlon of old debt carried over from tho unlucky speculative period of last year, and perhaps more es pecially of the "March settlements" on the interior market; Change In Kates Near. The formal recommendations of the ed t.'sory council to the federal reserve board a couple of .weeks ag did not foreshadow sty early relaxation of money rotes'. But If today's statement is to be followed by others of similar chaircter and tendency, some change In the money market cannot bo verj lonir delayed. As measured by actual transactions, to day's stocl: market fell to the lowest levels or inactivity sinca !(,9t Kummer, and theru were virtually n. changes in price except trifling fractions. The net changes for the whole past week were exceedingly ir regular. Declines predominated, but with a very considerable list of net advances also, running in many stocks to several points, and the same was true of bonds. Foreign exchange ended the wee with moderate declines, mostly recovered beforo the close. Th only financial movement of today positive, enouph to attract atten tion was another half penny decline in s:lver at London to 20 1 pence per ounce. Tho mcllna from the high point of Feb ruary, 1920. has now been 66 per cent, a fall half as violent again a.s the average aucinio inscomtr.o'Jlt'es. New York Quotations Range of prices of the leading stocks furnished by Logan & Bryan, Peters Trust building: RAILS rinse High Low Close Friday By CHARLES D. MICHAELS. Chicago Tribune-Omaha Bee Leased Wire. Chicago. March S. An increased selling pressure and a lessened buy ing power took the .bull edge off the grain markets, and while the lowest prices were not held on wheat, the coarse grains finished at the inside with net losses at 1 5-8 to 2c on wheat, l-2c on corn, 1-4 to l-2c on oats. 1-4 to 1 l-2c on rye and 2c on barley. The week witnessed stronger and higher markets for five days with a setback at the last, which was only natural with more selling pres sure and a reduction in tiic short in terest. Closing trade, compared with a week ago, showed, wheat up 3 to 5 l-4c, March being the weakest. Corn. 1 1-4 to 2 l-2c higher; oat 1 1-4 to 1 l-2c: rye, 4 to 4 l-4c; bar ley, 2c; pork, 60c; lard, 15 to 'l-2c, and'ribs,! 27-2 to 32 l-2c higher. V Bfrak in Wheat. A break of 3 05c in cash -wheat, with hard winter premiums lo and soft reds 1 to 2c lower, while spring wheats were hard to sell, combined with predictions of rains tor a good part of the winter wheat country, offset the affect of all bullish news. Tho markets felt the. ef fect of tho reduction in the urgent buy ing which has been a feature of late, also the Increased selling pressure which more than overbalanced the reports of high and dry winds and numerous bug reports from Kansas and Oklahoma. There was enough selling by a few local longs openly and through brokers to carry prices down 3e from the close of Friday. Local professionals bought early, following the commission houses, and sold out later" when they saw the non-response to the bullish news. After the decline came a rally of nearly 1c, with a close "io over the inside. Trading was largest In May, which ranged at $1.61 k to $1.63 4. There was selling of March and buying of May credited to the leading elevator in terest?. Receipts show good gains over last year. Omaha had 10 cars of hard winter in, here that brsmght l4c to 2c over Msrch. Kansas City offered hard winter here at iVio over March. The United King dom was in the market with bids 5c out of line. Export sales of flour were 15,000 barrels for two days. Trade sentiment was more bearish, due to the decline. Corn Support Poor. Corn was on the market and the sup port was poorer. Brokers who led the selling early- Were buyers later on the de cline. May broke from 72o to 71?c and finished around the low point. It was not a large maTkct at any time, in fact brok ers said it was the smallest of the week. Country offerings were not heavy , and purchase to arrivals not large. One house buught only 600 bushels at 60 stations in Illinois and Iowa. Export sales were. 270,000 bushels and domestic 20,000 bushels., with prices half a cent lower at the last. , One house loaded out 2,000.000 bUBhels for export during the week. Receipts were above the average. Arrivals, 286 cars for the day. Oats felt the effect of the heavy cover ing Friday. It is said that leading holders had reduced thelrr lines on the oarly bulge, but took most of it back at a small decline. A traveling maa who was out in the coun try the past week said the bulk of the corn in Illinois that has been sold to rains money, is nearly through coming to mar ket and this weeic is expected to see a lighter movement at tho least. He be lieves that farmers will hold their corn back after 'he rest 10 days and that there will be no heavy run, until after planting season. By that time he believes that farmers will havo become accustomed to the readjusted condition and sell freely. Possible Income for Each. $100 Unit Holder From One Oil Well in El Dorado. I do not expect to get a 4 0,000-barrel gusher like the Busey was reported to be. but I do exprea a real live gusher of thousands of barrels. I shall not indulge in further figures, for I do not want to buld you up to ex pectations that I can not bring into realities for you but 1 expect a big well. I expect it in a very few days. I expect to be paying you profits in a shorter time than it ordinarily takes to raise money to pay for a small lease. I say to you a 2.300 or 600-barrcl well is within the bounds of reason and I con fidently expect a well cf this magnitude. My leases spread out four ways from the Busey Discovery Gusher. New wells are already in pushing toward three of these properties and others drilling should soon prove the fourth. I have not formed a million-dollnr com pany, but am handling each well and each lease through little Grub-Stake Syndicates, with a profit-sharing interest in all car ried by the parent company, $10 or $100 or any other amount comes in on the ground floor shares in well now almost finished and participates in parent com pany and all leases and all wells and en hancements that may brimr millions, and the beauty of it all is in the quick action and shfif-t wait for results.
