While vc are accustomed to tliink of the air as an almost impalpable substance without, weight or power lot" itself, it is iiot only quite heavy, but it possesses the faculty of sup porting things to a degree that is ;i little short of amazing, as a study of a flying kite will demonstrate. The kite has : o wings like a bird, nor has it the assistance of a light gas like a balloon. Vet it remaiivs aloft and exerts a strong pull upon t he cord which connects it with the person who is operating it. That this power of flying is not inherent in the material ironi which the kite is made is apparent from the fact that if we roll the paper or cloth which makes up the kite into a ball, it will drop at once to the ground. The answer to the apparent para dox lies in the fr.ct that the paper or cloth is spread out so as to form a wide area against which the air can push, thus exerting a considerable portion of its ability to support things. Even on a fairly calm dav a kite can be flown by running along the ground while the kite is sus pended some distance behind us, for wc then crea,te a condition similar to a wind the opposition of the air to the surface ot the kite. The fly ing apparatus will rise higher and j nigner, dependent upon tne velocity I of the movement and the spread of its surface, until it reaches a point where the weight of its own body plus the string will cause it to over- balance the support 'of the air.
