under the waves, to the modern type
of motor boat which draws only a
few inches. In loading a ship, it
was formerly difficult to .'ell just
when the danger-line had been
reached, and a number of ship-build
ers took the precaution of painting
a broad line around the hull to in
dicate that the addition of more
cargo Hvould imperil the craft and
incline it to "turn turtle."
In 1886 an Englishman. Samuel
Plimsoll, introduced a bill into Par
liament dealing with what were then
known as "coffin-ships" boats tha!
were sent to srfa overloaded and
heavily insured, so that owners
might recover more than the value
of the cargo m the event that the
ship was lost. After a bitter fight,
I'limsoll succeeded in having hi."
water-lined bill" enacted into a
law, and from that time on, English
ships were required to have a water
line clearly indicated, and no boat
coutd be loaded so that this lint was
beneath the surface.

Bandits Rob Bank
Newhampton, Mo., Dec. .30. Five
masked bandits in a motor sedan
drove up to the Farmers' bank here
early today, bound and gagged- the
watchman and robbed the safety de
posit vault of $5,000 in Liberty
bonds, after chiseling through a 14
inch brick wall. An attempt to
blow the safe failed. Then they
leisurely entered their; closed tar and
drove away. '
