THE BEE : ' OMAHA. SATURDAY, MAY 8, 1920 HOLDING' A HUSBAND Adele Garrison's New Phase of ' Revelations of a Wife Why Did Alfred Durkee Whisper I would not daunt her by answer ing her in the affirmative. She is entitled to rose color and sunlight now; it is her time- for gladness, un " tinged by worry, but if 1 had an swered her truthfully I should have Said: "Yes, Leila, it is the hardest task in the world." But just outside my window I see the sunlight break ing through the drizzle, and I take it ; as a good men for the vow I am taking: "It is the hardest thing in the world, but, please God, I, am going to succeed in it." Isn't that the train?" Lelia Fairfax lifted her pretty eyes from the sewing on her lap as she spoke, then flushed crimson at the teasing glance I flung at her. ' "I fancy it is," I relorted coolly, "but I don't see why it shoditl in terest you. You'd far better put your mind on that hem or your htitches will show through the crepe, and then, what will your future mother-in-law say?" "What an ogress you are!" she pouted saucily. "But I'm not go ) ing to let even a threat like that spoil meeting Alf. Come . along. You've sat on a cushion and sewed a hne seam long enough tor one afternoon.. And Dicky doesn't like to play gooseberry." , "You mean you don't like to have him," I put away the blouse I was embroidering, and went to my closet for my hat and coat, for the walk to the afternoon train to meet Dicky and Alfred Durke? appealed to nie. We never went quite to the fttatmn linlpcc wa rnlr tli rrxr motored down for them, but met thm Ml -til kofififitl rIA r-ri A A I I 1 . . ! , IIUIII llic MdUUII, WIULI1 is one of the deliehts of Marvin. j Leila made a little moue at me in the . mirror before which she was 1 aritintinc tier tisf with n.inetilrinn I care. "I suppose if that chapcau were one-sixteenth of an inch out of plumb Alfred would break the en gagement, wouldn't he?" I asked solemnly. She tied her veil hurriedly she is one of the few girls to whom veils are especially becoming, and as she naturally is perfectly aware of the fact, she generally wears one and turned to me with an appealing lit tle smile. "I suppose I am a fuss budget," she said ruefully. "'But you know how fastidious Alfred is, and what a careless fly away I am. If I'm not going to annoy him terribly after we are married I shall have to begin to practice before hand." "What particular foible is Alfred preparing to banish so that he won't annoy you?" I asked slyly, then men tally anathematized myself for the words. I have resolved so many times since the preparations of Lei la Fairfax's wedding began that I would keep from voicine to the een tie Virginia girl my disapproval of the attitude she is unconscipusly adopting toward the man she's to Despite her gay sauciness and the good common sense which I know her to possess. I can see that she is predestined from her very nature and training to be the patient Gri selda type of wife. And though Alfred Durkee is one of the finest chaps in the world, yet he is no dif ferent from other men in the mas culine tendency to tread heavily upon a doormat when one is spread invitingly before his feet. How ever, I. have striven to impress upon my soul and tongue the fate of med dlers, with, I am afraid, but indif ferent success. ' Kut I need not have worried as to the effect of any words of mine.' Leila's face as she turned it toward me wore a look of astonishing, in credulity. "Why, he hasn't anyl" she ex claimed so earnestly that I quickly dodged out of the door, under pre tense of haste in order to keep her from seeing the amused smile I couldn't repress. , But she wa quick enough of per ception to sense the smile she could rot see, and she ran lightly down the stairs after me, slipping her hand through my arm as we went out of the hall door. "I suppose you think I'm an awful idiot," she pouted, "but 'fess up now. Could you see any faults in Dicky three weeks before you were mar ried?" Even as I fell into tep with her fciy thoughts flew back to the cyni cal whisperings of the little mock ing devil who sometimes torments me, and who tinged even the wild happiness of my ' bethrothal days and those of my early wedded life with distrust of the possibilities of a blissful marriage. Because of my mother's sad ex perience I had been able to see clearly how unsuited Dicky and I were to each other, to realize his faults as well as my own. Despite all this I had thrown all my theories to the winds and married him im petuously, unreasoningly,, but there had remained with me a certain cynicism which had helped, to bal ance me in those early days. .But I had no intention of confid ing to Leila the heart secrets of that early time, ncr of making her self- conscious in the. presence of. hen lover as she might become if I told her the truth about my own experi ence. Therjfore I answered her lightly: " 'Nary a fault. But there'll be two or three seen in us if we don't hurry. The boys will be almost home before we get to the boule vard." But it was Alfred alone whom we met half-way to the station. "The Dicky-bird is being gobbled up alive by that awful old bore, Smithers," he said gayly. "I couldn't stop to rescue him, having other im portant business on hand,', he smiled tenderly at Leila, "but he gave me a glance that meant, 'Send me wife along, quickly.'" "Machiaveli I" I gibed, as I' left them. . A low-toned question from Alfred, which I knew he did not mean me to hear, came to my ears, brought by the wind which was blowing toward me: , "Did you tell her?" (Continued Tomorrow.) Bee .Want Ads Produce Results. WHY?- t Naval Gunnery So Accurate? (Copyright, 1S!0. by Wheeler Syn dicate, Inc.) The layman who realizes the difficulty of hitting a target when he is standing on solid land and the bull's eye is only a few hun dred yards away, is naturally amazed when he reads of hits scored by naval gnus at a dis tance of a dozen miles or more in a rough and treacherous sea. The secret lies in a small hori zontal tube, located in the upper part of the warship's rigging and known as the "range finder." By looking into the center of this tube, the man whose job it ia to determine the range sees objects a long distance off in two separate halves. He turns the carefully adjusted screw until the two halves of the image meet and then reads the distance in yards or meters directly from a scale which is under his eye. The process is a matter of seconds. Through deflection of light rays by a movable prism, the range finder measures angles and com putes the distance mechanically, accurately, instantly. Once the range is discovered, the rest is easy. The big guns , are trained and a few seconds later tons of projectiles are hurled toward the ship or the submarine or the fort which is the object of the attack.
