POLITICIANS ARE -BLAMED FOR COST OF COTTON GOODS Head of Jobbing; House De : clares Administration Has x f Stalled Investigation of Profits of Growers Chicago Trl bone-Omaha Bea Leased Wire Chicago, May 7. Responsibility for high pricei in cotton dress goods rests UDon political meddling, ac cording to I. B. Schreiber of the . firm of Schreiber & Sobelone of the largest cotton and woolen dress tpods jobbing houses in the west. Mr. Schreiber added that instead of j coming down, the prices of cotton ! . goods will advance. ( "A few years ago we were told by i poton,' and so save the southern growers. At that time the planters were geetting 10 cents a pound and that is the price we paid. We were told at the time that if the planters xouid only get i ents a pound they would be saved. Now they are getting 42 cents a pound and in - vesications of that orice have been forestalled by politicians while here in Chicago little dealers in potatoes and sugar are being indicted as profiteers. ; "It is said the big reductions in the price of silk will force down prices on, cotton goods. With pres ent prices on raw cotton, I do not ee where these hopes can ma terialize. Buyers who are laying in stocks for 1920 are paying 70 per tent over the present prices for - sheer cotton goods." Mr. Schreiber denies that whole salers and jobbers in cotton goods are guilty of profiteering. "I am told that an investigation made last winter by manufacturers of wom en's dresses, sold by tfce manufac turers at $32.50 per garment, were retailed at from $50 to $100 and even higher." Merchants are beginning to weed Cut their costly stocks and are nor. loading up at presentences. All of tiiem expect a slump very soon and do not wisb to be caught with shelves full of high-priced stocks. Vanderlip Declares ;U. S. Can't Make Loans To All of Far East V Tokio, May 7. America's best contribution to the economic read justment of the far east will be something more than financial en gagements, said .Erank Vanderlip, Vho is visiting Japan at the head of a commercial mission, to a corre spondent of Rueter's, Limited, to day. ; . "I feel," he declared, "there will te far more important things for America to do than to merely make -Joans, and I particularly doubt the Jivisdora of making loans to meet the expenses of governments and mili tary operations. American capital .tan earn a large return at home, and the needs, of Europe are ex treme. Therefore, the east cannot jtxpect capital to flow to it unless it goffers security comparable to that offered in. America and. Europe, as Veil as a comparatively attractive Tate of interests" Proh ibition Agent I Arrested for Taking : Bribes Totaling $60 t Milwaukee, Wis., May 7. Inves tigation into charges of grafting and bribery among local prohibition en forcement officers resulted in the ar rest last night of George Cowie, 35 , J-ears old, by Deputy United States 1 -Marshal William McCormick, on a lederal indictment. It is charged that Cowie accept ed two bribes amounting to $60 of lered by two Racine saloon keepers not to report the alleged selling of liquor. No Change In Strike Ranks ; Throughout France Today i ' Paris, May 7. There was no ap parent change in the strike situation throughout France this morning. During the past few days a large number of extremist railroad work- ; ers have been arrested, hut many of these have been released. " The executive committee of the 4 railway workers' federation held a stormy meeting last night at which it is understood, .there was strong sentiment in favor of calling off the strike if it could be done without appearing to capitulate to the gov ernment. Miners in the northern coal fields have finally decided to strike next Monday. , ' American Florists Deny Charge of s Profiteering Washington, May 7. Acting for the Society of American Florists, W? F. Gude, its Washington rep . resentative, has issued a denial of the statement by Miss Anna Jarvis, president of the Mothers' Day as i sociation, that ' florists profiteered in white carnations, the symbol of , observance of Mothers' . day, , last year. Miss Jarvis . had called on observers 6f the day this year to . abandon the carnation and display American flags. All member! of the society Jhroughout the country, Mr. Gude aid, hare been urged to sell white carnations at the usual market rate pn Mothers' day, Sunday, .May 9. Bolshevik Resistance Jn ..
