CONGRESS TAKES
UP PROBLEMS OF
U.S. TRADE SHIPS
Two Days' Conference, During
Which Future Policy Will
Be Formulated Opens In
Washington.
Washington,' April IS. Data beam
ing on problems of the shipping
board in its operation of and dis
position to private ownership of the
government's merchant marine was
submitted today to business men of
the country and chairmen of con
gressional committees who began a
two 'days' conference . here with
members of the board.
Two former chairmen of the
boardj Secretary of Interior Payne
and Edward N. Hurley of Chicago,
were among those present. The men
advising with the board represent
the country's greatest commercial
and industrial interests.
Particular importance attaches to
the point of view of the leaders of
industries in the middle west, of
ficials of the board declared. There
people have been accustomed to
think in terms .of ships, and it is
especially desired that they be awak
ened to. the necessity for an Amer
ican merchant marine to transport
the nation's commerce.
