The return of railroads to private management Monday left the pas senger traffic department of the Pacific railroad with the seri ous problem of transporting some 40.000 tourists who have been spending the winter in California hack to their homes in the eastern and middle-western states. L. C. Quinn, passenger agent for the Union Pacific, announced yes terday that he had received definite information that the Union Pacific and other transcontinental lines had 70,000 sleeping car reservations frcm California to the east Movement is Unequalled. "This eastward movement, which is unequalled in the annals of Amer ican railroading, will necessitate the running of three separate sections of the Overland Limited on its east lio.tnd trip,'' Mr. Quinn said. "The enormous problem of transporting these tourists to their homes in the cast may be better understood when it realized that it practically took all winter to carry these people to California." The tourit of today, especially the farming class of Nebraska and Iowa, have also become more dis criminating than they were in the period previous to federal control of roads, according to Mr. yuinn. Farmers An Critical ' 'The farmers who used to ride in tourist cars and carry their lunches with them now ride in drawing rooms, lounge in the observation car, smoking $1 cigars and eat in the dining cars," Mr. Quinn de clared. "Some farmers' wives even carry their own maids." "With the return of railroads and incidentally, the relurn. of competi tion this class can now travel in the luxurious manner which their hearts desire. They may take their morning bath in a porcelain tub, have barber and valet service and telephone con nections at the larger cities." Track Laborer Found Dead In Room From Asphyxiation Lynn V. Packer, 50 years old, track laborer, was found dead in his room. at 1418 Chicago street, from ra asohvxiation. Roomers at the place broke in the door to Parker's room when escaping gas was de tected at 10 'o'clock in the morning. All the jets of a gas stove in the room were found turned on. The windows and door had been shut tightly. Two New Members Named On City Recreation Board Rev. Carl M. Wordea and Leo Rosenthal have been named by the mayor and confirmed by the city council as members of the Board of Public Recreation, succeeding P. J. Martin, resigned, and Dr. J. P. The present situation in the hide market is only temporary and cannot result in benefit to the con sumer, they said. O. F. Lawyer, vice president of the Kirkendall Shoe company, charged the hide market was being manipulated to force temporary "skidding" of prices. "It is true," .he said, "that hide prices are very low just now, but there really exists a shortage of hides throughout the country. Man facturers have laid in their supply of hides in advance and as a result there is no present market for the hides on hand. But they'll go up again as soon as manufacturers really begin to buy necessary stocks. Cannot Find Market. "Shoes right now are being sold both at wholesale and retail at lower prices than they will have to be sold for later." "The slump in hide prices could not affect shoe prices for from 10 to 18 months, anyhow," asserted F. G. Hayward, secretary and treasurer of Hayward Brothers, shoe jobbers. "Even a big cut in hide prices would probably be more than offset by in creases in things that go into the cost of shoe manufacture." - South Omaha packers and officials of the National Fur and Tanning company, declared they had on hand big supplies of hides for which they were unable to find a market, even at prices from 50 to 6S per cent less than the top market price of last June, when hides sold for 45 and 50 cents a pound. No Help for Consumer. E. L. Lotz, manager of the Polar Trading and Training company, said that company had been for tunate in disposing of its supply of' hides, but supported statements that the hide market at present was in a severe slump. "Hides which sold in January at 32 cents a pound are being offered now at 20 cents," he said, "and there has been a general drop of at least 40 per cent in all grades. Unusually heavy importations from South America are partly responsible." But, it is a market flurry that will not help the consumer, all of them admit.
