The three masked robbers who
held up and robbed John Johnson,
manager of the Berquist CoalJconi
pany, Twenty-second and Washing
ton streets, South Side, at 6 o'clock
Saturday night, were arrested by de
tectives Sunday morning and"
charged -with robbery, a police re
port states. " '
they gave their names as frank
Clayton, 618 South Seventeenth
street, Raymond Lane, Eighteenth ;
and Leavenworth streets, and Mi
chael Randall, Twenty-fourth and N
streets.
According to a signed confession
of Lane, Clayton induced Randall
and him to commit the holdup, in
order to get Vnoney to pay a doctor's
bill for the treatment of Clayton's
wife during the past two years.
.Meet Jn Afternoon.
Lane said he "met Clayton and
Randall' at Twenty-fourth and N
streets at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
"Clayton told Randall and I to
follow him," Lane said. ."We went-
to Randalls home, where we got
two guns. Clayton already had one;
Clayton" then gave instructions as
how to ptilt off the robbery of the
coal, company. Ve entered the coal
shed in the yards and tied handker
chiefs about our faces.
"Entering the office, Randall and .
I held guns pointed at the manager
and an employe while . Clayton
searched them. We got $52 and
about 10 checks, and left.
Divide the Money.
"We then went to my home at
Eighteenth and Leavenworth streets
and divided the money."
Clayton was the first of the trio
who was arrested. Detectives
nabbed him Saturday night after he '
tried to pass one of the stolen
checks at. the Guarantee Clothing,
company, Sixteenth and Dodge
streets. Randall and Lane were ar
rested next day. v
All three have been identified as
the holdup men, a police report '
states.
