Chicago Grain and Provisions.
Chicago, March 7. Mistaken Inferences
that the government report on farm re
serves would be ot a bullish character did
a good deal today to send the corn mar
ket soaring. Prices closed strong, 4140 to
4ft c net higher, with May, $1.34 14 to
$1.3414, and July, $1.2914 to $1.29. Oats
gained 2c to 2'ic, and provisions (Oo to
$1.00.
Buying of corn on a large scale through
out the day forced the market higher
and higher, but Just after the finish a
most unwelcome surprise came to the
traders who had been so eager to pur
chase. The surprise was the fact that
government figures showing the amount of
corn back on farms exceeded the most
optimistic private estimates. With only
the forecasts In view, most of today's
buyers apparently believed that any ex
ports of corn from the United State would
be at the direct expense of the necessary
feed supply for domestlo live stock.
European orders for meats tended further
to Increase bullish sentiment, and so like
wise did report that the New York har
bor workers' strike aeemed to be nearly
te an end.

It advanc In almost every quarter of

Brokers reported heavy buying for both

the more Important factor, latest advice
reapactlng railroad and Industrial condi

of the bears.
As yet there appears to be no warrant
for reports that a banking syndicate Is
contemplated to finance the pressing da.

reflected wider and mors substantial In
qulry than at any recent time.
Steels, equipments and the varied Hat
-of "peace'' Industrials gathered further
momentum from Chairman Gary's
prophecy of large trade prosperity and
shippings rallied from their recent
lethargy, rising buoyantly In th later
dealings.
United States Steel made a new high
for the current movement, forfeiting a

related shares, notably Republic Iron,
Crucible and Lackawanna Steels, Baldwin

were comparatively backward.
The only stock to manifest relative
heaviness wss Kelly-Sprlngfleld Tire,

better feeling may before long find reflec

actual trading. Already, operation In cer

freer, and though there I everywhere a
prudent disinclination to act hastily, prep

the contemplated extensions of producing

been demonstrated that business rests on
a solid foundation, complete transition
from the war basis must necessity be a
somewhat protracted process and accom
panied by various uncertainties tending to
cause general healtancy.
