"Carry
On"
The
Slogan
For 1918
The British call the act of
perseverance with cheerfulness
'carrying on." The Canadians
are the best of all, we hear, at
carrying on. Our Sammies are
going to match their northern
cousins at the game, we know.
But what of us here at home,
who must face the thirteen bil
lion' dollar budget and smile?
Surely, the slogan for us can
be no less than the word we send
our boys over there "Carry
On!"
"Carry On" with our usual
scheme of living as far as it is
in sympathy with patriotism,
good judgment, wise economy
and common sense. Calmly with
perseverance, with dogged ten
acity of purpose, but with that
cheerfulness born of well weigh
ed confidence we must carry on
in 1918.
Business must roll over and
roll up the turn over of money
must produce the wherewithal
to accomplish that thirteen bil
lion dollar budget to back up
thft'Army and the Navy in -the
colossal tasks expected of them.
This store Is going to "Carry
On."
We are clearing our decks and
placing the store on a war foot
ing, so as to be of the "greatest
service to the greatest number,"
by giving them the important
advantages of its wide powers
of economy by cash buying.
A Dispatch From Washington
WASHINGTON, D. C, Dec. 28. Merchants who have been offer
ing to take Liberty Bonds for merchandise were appealed to by Sec
retary McAdoo tonight to stop the practice.
"We are making the strongest effort," the Secretary said, "to
have these bonds purchased for permanent investment by the people
at large, to be paid for out of the past and future savings of those
who buy them. Purchases thus made not only result in providing
funds for the uses of the government, but they also effect a con
servation of labor and material.
"In addition, such bonds when taken in exchange for merchandise,
must in most cases be immediately sold in the open market. This
naturally tends to depress the market price of the issue."
Following Mr. McAdoo' Suggestion:
W Shall Discontinue from TkU Data tha Acceptance of Liberty
Bond in Payment for Merchandise.
