been carried over from yesterday when
packers laid down on the close. Buyers
worts still very bearish this morning and
they succeeded In buying tha bulk of their
hogs lower, despite strength at other points.

lower Than any other way, but It was hard
to quota s general market on account of
the extreme Irregularity of the trade.
Packers bought most of their hogs at
316. 00015.30. There was quite a sprinkling
of shippers and some of the best heavies
bought by packers on up, a number of
loads selling at $16.60, which was the top.

Sheep There was almost nothing In the
sheap and lamb line offered today, only two
cars, or about 600 head, being reported In.
This Is by far the smallest run of the week.
The total for the five days of 14,020 head Is
a.nuu smaller than last week and almost
14,000 lighter than for the corresponding
period a year ago, but larger than two
weeks ago by about 1,700 head.
The fsw bunches that were on sale fur
nished no basis for quoting a market, but
other markets, were higher, local sales
looked higher and traders were of the
opinion that had supplies been of decent else
prices would nave duplicated yesterday's
quarter advance.
A couple of single decks mads up the en
tire offerings. They Included a fsw pretty
good native spring lambs that brought
$17.26, and some decent shorn ewes at $9.s6.
No clipped lambs were on sale, hut a good
kind was quotable as high as $16.60, and
toppy spring lambs would probably have
sold around 317.60.
(All kinds of fat lambs have been on the
upgrade all week, there being an advance
of 2&o or more nearly every day, end cur
rent quotations are anyway $1.36 higher
than last Friday. Until the latter days of
the week old sheep did not share the reac
tion, but on ihe close there has been a
higher tendency to the trade, and present
prices look to be 36060c above a week ago.
Fair to good ewes are selling at fB.00O10.00
and real toppy kind might beat that a

The general tons of the cash market waa
a trifle ussier today) but the demshd for
corn and oats reutlnued active, and there
was an I m proved Inquiry for the better
gruriea of wheat.
Receipts of wheat and oats were very
light, with total arrivals of sixteen and
nine cars, respectively, whllt corn receipts
continued targe, with arrivals of 163 cars.
The wheat market was quoted from Sc
to 4c lower, No. 9 hard selling around $3.90,
while No. 8 hHrd ringed from $187 to
t'J.NH. and No. 4 hard sold from $2.83 to
$:'..
Corn sold very readily, but at somewhat
lower prices, the market generally being
quo tod from a fourth to 3o under the
quotations of the previous day.

Sellers reported a good Inquiry for all
grades of oats, but as rcretpts were ex
tremely light the trade in this market was

Almost from the outset opinion was sen
eral that tho wheat crop this sesson would
bo considerably larger than tho government
report had Indicated. Sentiment In this re
spect, however, became much more nro-
nounced after the Issuance of a definite
statement by a leading authority that the
outlook woe for a yield of 05.000.000 hush
els as against 656,000,000 hutthels stiEReHted
by the government. Advices from other
usually trustworthy sources were to the ef
fect thnt the winter crop eBncotally had nro-
gressed late under highly favorable condi
tions and that the quality was good.
Cold weather likely to Intnrfore with ths
best development of corn had a bullish ef
fect on the t ' cereal. A subsequent rise In
tomperstures acted ns only In part sn off
set. There was likewise but a transient
bearish influence from eosmId that the con
dltlon of the crop was equal to a ten.year
average and that the July report would
show a prospect of the largest yield on
re corn.
Signs of export demand helped to lift

excellent and a big Increase of acreage was
