Csah wheat was generally stronger,
ranging from unchanged to a cent higher.
The nemaml for wheat was qiili active
and the sales were fairly heavy.
The corn market was pretty strong but
the cash demand waa rather alow and the

Argentine shipments had trebled lq vol
ume, as compared with a week ago, gave
control of the wheat market today to
the bears. Prices closed heavy, T4c to 140
net lower, with May at $l.Mt1.2av4 and
July at 31.22V Other speculative articles,
too, shewed a setback corn, Sc to Stp
Sc; oats, '40 to lViyle, and provisions,
12'to to 26c.
Reports of big shipments of wheat
from Argentina were accompanied by ad
vices that Australian shipments would
slso be substantially enlarged. The ef
fect waa to wipe out speedily all trace
of an advance which had taken place
here In the first part of the session and
to send the market later almost uninter
ruptedly down grsde. It waa said In thla
connection tbat Franca and Italy had
made special freight arrsngementg to
provide transportation for largo amounts
of wheat already . under contract In
Argentina.
Hessian fly danger waa chiefly re
sponsible for a temporary bulge at the
outset In the value of wheat. According
to a leading crop expert, th peat has'
spread westward in Kansas over an Im
portant wheat-producing territory.
Coarse gralna eased off with wheat.
At first, however, com showed an ad
vance. Influenced to some extent by com
plaints of dry weather In Argentina. Oat
were bearlahly affected late In the day
by word of Canada offering oats freely
to the east for shipment at the opening
of navigation.
Provisions weakened under heavy sell.
Ing by longs. Higher prices oa hogs
caused an upturn, but not of a lasting
sort. New export business waa noticeably
small.
