CATTLE Receipts were lllwral this
morning, but In spite of that fact the de
mand nt very active and the trade In
very satisfactory condition. Prices on
beef steers were lOWISc higher so far aa
the best gradra of tattle were concerned.
In other words, buyer put back what
they took off Monday, making the mar
ket not much different from what It wna
last week. The quality of the offerlnga
was not very good, so that tho sale do
not show up very high on paper.
Cow and heifer were active at price
that were strong to as much as 10c
higher.
Feeders were in good demand and a
little stronger than Monday.

I litter absence of investment demand was
aanln a striking feature.
There was a renewal, on a moderate
scale, of the recent selling for foreign
account, chiefly In the bond division, and
ipioted values In some high grade Issnies
showed concessions. Exchange markets,
were mote steady, except on German"
and Italy, tho better tone being due, II
ana believed to tho German-Austrian
embargo.
ln the final hour of the session thera
ins a precipitate decline In the. stock
and 4 per cent bonds of distillers" securi
ties, each breaking about 6 points.
This w-as preceded bv greater heavi
ness In thi! grain markets, which rallied
sllklitly at tho close.
The uncertain state of the copper In
dustry was shown by the varying alti
tude adopted by some of the producing
mpanlea In their divided policies. on
of which restored Its resular rate of dis
bursement, whl'e others deferred action
or made reductions. In the steel trade
prices of certain specialties were ad
vanced, Erie reported a g.iln liv net for Januarys
of 1M,OHO and Canadian Pacific and
Chesapeake Ar Ohio managed to cut op
i rating expenses to the extent of yield
ing moderate net returns, but Soaloard
Air Line reflected Its recent heaviness
with a loss of $2,o0rt,0nn. New York Cen
tral was !lrm on Its favorablo statement
Issued after the closo of yesterday
market.
lAndon'H markets were steady on lm
provement In the ship labor situation,
and reduction of marine rates. Canadian
Pacific and Union Pacific reflected mod-'
crate Inquiry.
The local bond market waa Irregular,
speculative low priced Issues declining
hhsrply. Total sales par value wern
