IMPLEMENT MEN SAVE MONEY
Freight Checking Department Helps
Dealers Considerably.
LEHMKUHL IS AGAIN ELECTED
Resolutions Are Adopted Commrnd-
lnir-the Jobbers for the Inter
est'Tliey Have Taken In
the Convention.
The sum of $1,621.30 was saved for the
retail Implement dealers meratjers of the
Midwest Retail Implement Pealers' asso
ciation by the freight checking depart
ment, which has during the last year
been looking oyer errors in freight bills
for the members. Th.e reP.0.rt was made
by C. E. Chllde of tho traffic bureau of
Iho Omaha Commercial club, who has
been handling tho checking for the as
sociation. This sum was saved to 210 members who
turned In freight bills to be checked. Of
this sum $3,000.32 already has been col
lected, while of outstanding claims not
yet collected there are $1,623.98.
The total amount represents a saving
of an average of $22.02 per member. An
overcharge of $M0 was found for one
member, for another un overcharge In
freight of $10. Fourteen members ha
an average overcharge of from $00 to
$100. Thirty-five members had overcharge
of from $25 to $00 apiece. Sixty members
had an overcharge of from $10 to $23 per
member. Thirty-six members had an
overcharge of from $5 to $10 per member.
Seventeen members had an overcharge
of from $3 to $0 and forty-six members
had less than $3.
. Not Intentional Overcharges.
This, the report explains, does not
mean that the railroads Intentionally
overcharge ttje dealer', but It explains
that on account of the very complicated
schedules o'f freight rates, It is easy for
mistakes to occur and accumulate on
Individuals until they amount to a great
deal of money. The attention of the
members was called to the fact that they
are amply repaid In their membership
In the association In setting such re
markable service In the checking of their
freight bills.
Ed Lehmkule of Wahoo, was re-elected
president of the association for another
year. E, E. Morris of Turin, la., was
chosen vice president. John Patterson
of Kearney and Martin Nelson of Hart
Ington were chosen'members of the board
of- directors. -The secretary and treasurer
are chosen by the board of directors.

Denies, Omaha Job
SAN FRANCISCO. Cal., Jan. 9,-Ralph
Fariss, a young train bandit sentenced to

highly of reform schools. Ho told the
warden of San Quentin prison yesterday
that the training he had received at
Washington and California reform schools
had done him much good.
Fariss begged the warden to aid him
!n his fight to escape tho gallows. He
denied that he had held up a Burlington

HOLDS TRAIN FOR FATHER
Fond Parent Was Eating When it
Pulled Out with Youngsters.
TEAIN DISPATCHER HELPS OUT
Orders Union Pacific Train No. 15
to IVult nt Fremont In Order
tn Reunite the Little
Family.
Whllo their father complacently satis
fied his appetite a: a lunch counter In
tho Union Pacific station here Thurs
day night, Union Pacific train No, 15
rolled out of tho depot with his two
children, aged 2 and 3 years, respectively.
Finishing his pic, the father strolled
to th4 cigar case, purchased a Havana
and started for tho gates, 'fho train
was gone.
Then the fond parent got well under
way. The station master, the call boys
and information desk, and the tele
graph operators wero' brought Into ad
vice. Flnully he got Into communication
with tho chief dispatcher for the Union
Pacific, mid presented liU cuse.
"(Jet on No. 3, and I'll have them hold
! No. 15 qt Ficiwmt until you get there,'
1 promptly repllid the dlsiut'-h'T
Th futjicr, torn with parental love and
duty and other things which returned to
his mind most rapidly, got aboard No, 3
with alacrity.
In tho meantime, a fat traveling sales
men on the train ahead had discovered
the two children. He had one or two
about' tho same size at home. Leaning
over tho back of the seut, ho played
with tho elder youngster for a while, and
then began to look around for tho parent
of the children.
No parent was to bo found,
Ross L. Hammond, collector of Internal
revenue nt Omaha, gazed suspiciously at
tho children, and being unable to recall
anything In tho rules of his department
to cover such a caifo, sat down .and began
to make faces and noises like a cow, for
tho amusement of tho youngsters.
Other passengers, discovering the at
tiactlon, laid asldo their newspapers and
magazines und joined tho little party.
It was a ripping hour for tho kiddles.
They laughed and smiled to tho delight of
tho littlo audience, and the passengers
redoubled their efforts to entertain them.
At Fremont, however, the fun camn to
of No. 15 received a telegram, ordering
though forgetful father.
Before No. 3 had fully stopped Fond
Father, with his ticket for Denver In one
hand and his I. at In tho other, swung off
I the truiii and ran fur No, 1, whose engi
neer was threateningly ringing the bell.
Tho sprint was mado before an appre
ciative audience, and when the train
rolled out of tho yards at Fremont, the
conscience-stricken dad, oblivious of the
smiles of tho other people In the car,
cuddled tho babies one on either arm and
made good resolutions to himself.

Income Tax Blanks
Ready for Mailing
to Many Nebraskans
ltoss I Hammond, collector of Internal
revenue for the district of Nebraska, has
received the blanks for Individual reports
required under the new Income tax law,
and the blanks will be sent to many Ne-.
braskans this week. Whllo the Internal
revenue department has already compiled
a list of persons suspected of having an
Income of more "than $3,000 a year, yet
the fact that these blanks for the report
are not matjed to an Individual will not
excuse that person from making the re
port. Failure to make tho report before
March 1, 19H, Is punishable with a fin
of from $20 to $1,000. The doctrine of "ig
norance is no excuse of the law" applies
to this as well as other federal laws, and
the assertion that one did not know the
report was require will not be an ade.
quate defense If tho Individual la prose
