The sum of $1,621.30 was saved for the
retail Implement dealers meratjers of the
Midwest Retail Implement Pealers' asso
ciation by the freight checking depart
ment, which has during the last year
been looking oyer errors in freight bills
for the members. Th.e reP.0.rt was made
by C. E. Chllde of tho traffic bureau of
Iho Omaha Commercial club, who has
been handling tho checking for the as
sociation. This sum was saved to 210 members who
turned In freight bills to be checked. Of
this sum $3,000.32 already has been col
lected, while of outstanding claims not
yet collected there are $1,623.98.
The total amount represents a saving
of an average of $22.02 per member. An
overcharge of $M0 was found for one
member, for another un overcharge In
freight of $10. Fourteen members ha
an average overcharge of from $00 to
$100. Thirty-five members had overcharge
of from $25 to $00 apiece. Sixty members
had an overcharge of from $10 to $23 per
member. Thirty-six members had an
overcharge of from $5 to $10 per member.
Seventeen members had an overcharge
of from $3 to $0 and forty-six members
had less than $3.
. Not Intentional Overcharges.
This, the report explains, does not
mean that the railroads Intentionally
overcharge ttje dealer', but It explains
that on account of the very complicated
schedules o'f freight rates, It is easy for
mistakes to occur and accumulate on
Individuals until they amount to a great
deal of money. The attention of the
members was called to the fact that they
are amply repaid In their membership
In the association In setting such re
markable service In the checking of their
freight bills.
Ed Lehmkule of Wahoo, was re-elected
president of the association for another
year. E, E. Morris of Turin, la., was
chosen vice president. John Patterson
of Kearney and Martin Nelson of Hart
Ington were chosen'members of the board
of- directors. -The secretary and treasurer
are chosen by the board of directors.

Ralph Fariss Now
Denies, Omaha Job
SAN FRANCISCO. Cal., Jan. 9,-Ralph
Fariss, a young train bandit sentenced to
hang next March for murder, thinks
highly of reform schools. Ho told the
warden of San Quentin prison yesterday
that the training he had received at
Washington and California reform schools
had done him much good.
Fariss begged the warden to aid him
!n his fight to escape tho gallows. He
denied that he had held up a Burlington
train near Omaha last November. Omaha
authorities had telegraphed that the de

required under the new Income tax law,

revenue department has already compiled
a list of persons suspected of having an
Income of more "than $3,000 a year, yet
the fact that these blanks for the report
are not matjed to an Individual will not
excuse that person from making the re
port. Failure to make tho report before

of from $20 to $1,000. The doctrine of "ig
norance is no excuse of the law" applies
to this as well as other federal laws, and
the assertion that one did not know the
