The site chosen for the, memorial Is n triangle In a small grove of trees, almost directly south ot the president's ofdeo building, and Just outside the driveway around tho ellipse, Although of small, dimensions, the foun tain is of decided artlstlu merit. It Is about twelve feet In height over all, and consists ot a low granite pedestal, rup porting a bowl of Tennessee marble about eight feet in dlamoter, from tho center of which rises a square shaft also of Tennessee marbtc. The. shaft Is of sim ple classic design and rises about tour feet above the level of tho water in the baBln like a veil. Around the upper edge of the basin Is the 'following Inscription: "In memory ot FrancU Davis Millet, lStS-19i:, and Archibald Wnlllngham Butt, 1S65-19U, this monument has been erected by their friends, with tho sanction of conureM." On one side of' the shaft la an armed female figure, in. bas-relief, representing chivalry, having special reference to MaJ, Butt's aid to women and, children on tho occasion of the disaster In which he met his death. On the, opposite side la a similar figure, representing nrt, personi fied by a woman with rhythmlo flowing drapery. That figure, has special refer ence to Mr. Millet as a member of tho commission of fine arts. The memorial was designed by Daniel Chester French,, the New York sculptor, In collaboration with Thomas.
