The site chosen for the, memorial Is n

directly south ot the president's ofdeo

around tho ellipse,
Although of small, dimensions, the foun
tain is of decided artlstlu merit. It Is
about twelve feet In height over all, and
consists ot a low granite pedestal, rup
porting a bowl of Tennessee marble about
eight feet in dlamoter, from tho center
of which rises a square shaft also of
Tennessee marbtc. The. shaft Is of sim

Around the upper edge of the basin Is
the 'following Inscription:
"In memory ot FrancU Davis Millet,

On one side of' the shaft la an armed
female figure, in. bas-relief, representing
chivalry, having special reference to MaJ,
Butt's aid to women and, children on tho
occasion of the disaster In which he met
his death. On the, opposite side la a
similar figure, representing nrt, personi

Tests.
It has been a tradition among archi
tects that none ot them could guarantee
an ocholess auditorium or a smokeless
flue. Nature, Is fickle, and however much
her laws have been reduced to science In
sound or In convection, the tact Is in
controvertible that every building has
been a law unto Itself In the mutter of
ound, and every chimney the nrbltor of
its destiny on the question of draught
So It is with considerable elation that
the trustees 'or directors ot sound-bafflinx
publlo halls can receive the assurance
that science has applied tests practically
to eliminate the echo and the reverbatlon
and to provide distinct audition through,
out large buildings. A notable test took
place in the Second Presbyterian church
at St. Louis, and after "tracing" tlje elu
sive sound deflectors by means of sensl.
tlve apparatus determined that a more
resilient wall covering In parts of tlve
church auditorium would obviate th
trouble, The conolulona were proved cor
rect on a trial of the modified Interior
walls last Sunday.
Thus modern archltocure gves scientific
attention to acoustics and gradually Is
arriving at fundamental rules whloh. (t is
conceivable, will enable the arohltect to
guarantee the sound properties of his
building with quite U9 ITlUeh aiiliranr m
he calculates the sustaining poaer of his !
walls. Harmless little angles which seem
merely decorative, but which throw vocal
propulsion askew, will be eliminated, and
materials for the interior will be chosen
for their compliance with the laws of
sound, rather than for theJr fitness In the
color or structural seheine.-Indianapolls
