Wheat at no time had a backset of
more than a fraction. Asldo from the re
covery of Wall street values tho most
Important development was a further
cutting down of the cxlort surplus in
Argentina. Thu estlmato was reduced to
112,000.000 bushels, as compared with 12S,
ivjo.OOO to 130,000,000 bushels In Kptember.
Mav wheat ranged from 89c to 897o, with
last sales io net higher at 89ic. No. -red
cash sold hero today at 15c over the
May price, tho greatest premium on the
"o'rfi rose In sympathy with wheat.
There was talk also that the cold
weather would bring corn Into greater
immediate use. May fluctuated between
4S',?Sl4o and 48c. closing steady, Uc
up at 48'Afi4SHc. Cash grades were in fa i;
demand. No. 2 yellow was nuoted at 4Jji
uSt.e for carlots.
In oats, unloading of December by a
largo cash house weakened that deliv
ery. Otherwise the cereal was governed
bv the upward course of other grain. May
swung from 32c to 33c and closed Uc
dearer at 3JTii33c.
Sustaining orders from packers put
back 'strength into provisions. Most . of
the list wound up higher by 2V4o to 65i.4c

stock exchange today and there were
further spectacular fluctuations In Its
ptlco. In a Hrlod of excited trading early
In the day it broke 4U points to $L50t.
the lowest flguro since 1908. Later It
rose with a rush to $1.5614, a Ratti of 1
on tho dns .
The market as a whole showed more
stability than during ysterday's distur
bance. Although traders had no further
Information ns to the cause of the un
settlement and speculative sentiment was
confused, there was loss apprehension
on the part of security holders. Tho re
cent declines made prices "moro at (ac
tive ami considerable Investment buying
was reported. There was no reouircnce
of widespread liquidation of high grado
investment stocks, but on the other hand,
offerings were taken with sufficient read
iness to hold up the general level. The
result was that tho market ns a whole
did not respond as readily ns yoaterday
to the break In Union Pacific There
was heavy selling of Rending and it
yielded 214, but elsewhere declines wero
comparatively small. Steel was heavily
traded In. but was woll taken.
Evidence of the strength of tho gen
eral market led to Increased buying and
as Union Pacific began to rally there
was a scramble of the shorts to cover.
The rise In the price of the stocks was
more violent than tho decline hud been
at any time during the last ten days of
unsettlemetit and tho price at olio period
of the Upward rush rose 11 point between
sales. The market, which had not gone
down with Union Pacluc, went up with
it and lending stocks rose to 1 to 2
points above yesterday's close. Trading
grew quieter at the higher level and al
though prices eased oft toward the end
of the day. there was no further unscttle-
nient.
There was further calling of loans bv
banking Institutions on account of tho
shrinkages In value of collateral and the
closing out of weakly margined accounts
was another, unsettling ractor.
Bonds shared with stocks In the recov
ery with convertible Issues making the
best gains. Total sales par value, $2,507,
XV United States bonds unchanged on
call.
