IHr. 12.-1 nlon Pacific was Hddln tho center of activity on the stock exchange today and there were further spectacular fluctuations In Its ptlco. In a Hrlod of excited trading early In the day it broke 4U points to $L50t. the lowest flguro since 1908. Later It rose with a rush to $1.5614, a Ratti of 1 on tho dns . The market as a whole showed more stability than during ysterday's distur bance. Although traders had no further Information ns to the cause of the un settlement and speculative sentiment was confused, there was loss apprehension on the part of security holders. Tho re cent declines made prices "moro at (ac tive ami considerable Investment buying was reported. There was no reouircnce of widespread liquidation of high grado investment stocks, but on the other hand, offerings were taken with sufficient read iness to hold up the general level. The result was that tho market ns a whole did not respond as readily ns yoaterday to the break In Union Pacific There was heavy selling of Rending and it yielded 214, but elsewhere declines wero comparatively small. Steel was heavily traded In. but was woll taken. Evidence of the strength of tho gen eral market led to Increased buying and as Union Pacific began to rally there was a scramble of the shorts to cover. The rise In the price of the stocks was more violent than tho decline hud been at any time during the last ten days of unsettlemetit and tho price at olio period of the Upward rush rose 11 point between sales. The market, which had not gone down with Union Pacluc, went up with it and lending stocks rose to 1 to 2 points above yesterday's close. Trading grew quieter at the higher level and al though prices eased oft toward the end of the day. there was no further unscttle- nient. There was further calling of loans bv banking Institutions on account of tho shrinkages In value of collateral and the closing out of weakly margined accounts was another, unsettling ractor.
