arguing on tne bull side of the' late corn

? presents two distinct propositions, - the
cash and September based on small sup

congestion In the market for the early j

cash prices must be based on the promise
of the growing crop which Is certainly
; flattering at this time. Leaders In the

'will be needed for feeding from the 1912
crop, and It looks now as If crop might

NEW YORK. Aug. 14.-Taklng today's
highest quotations as a basis, the general
average of prices In the stock market
was the highest of the year. This was
mainly due to the strength of a number
of specialties of the semi-active c.ass,
whose recent advances have been pto
portlonately ggreater than those recorded
by the speculative favorites.
. As a matter of fact, however, many
of the better known specialties, Includ
ing Steel, made their best prices of the
year today, while Union Pacific, Amal
gamated Copper, smelting and other ac
tive Issues were higher than at any
period In several months.
Steel's rise, followed by that of inde
pendent steel companies, was naturally
associated with President Taft's message
to congress vetoing the steel bill.

dllliEP While receipts or stieep and
lambs this morning were a little larger
than a week ago and a year ago, they
were lighter than two weeks ago. Ac
cording to first estimates the ' receipts
footed up about forty-three cars or in the
nemghborhood of 10.7u0 head, the big bulk
of the offerings consisting of . lambs.
There were just as few fat sheep on the
market as yesterday and with the excep
tion, of a small number of nattves. were
made up entirely of heavy Montana
wethers. Lamb shipments Included con'
slgntnents from Oregon, Idaho and west
ern Nebraska. On the whole the supply
showed pretty fair quality .or about the
same as on yesterday, there being u
goodly number of fair to good lambs 011
sale. Really choice stuff of any kind was
scarce.
