NEW YORK. Feb. 54 -Promises held
out late yeeterdav of lmpnvement In the
tock market were hardly fulfilled today.
Price of the more active Issue opened
off snd more or less pressure was directed
aaaltist the whole hat. Thia was true of
Amaiaramated Copper, while such market
leaders as I'nited Slatea SteeL I nkm
Pacific and Reading also felt the force of
tne settling.
Again the weakest feature was the com
mon and preferred shares of the Repub
lic Iron and Steel oompsny. The former
tost r points and the latter almost s. mak
ing a loss of 7 points in the preferred
stock during the last fortnight. On th
Mock exchange It Is now a settled belief
that the Republic iron preferred dividend,
which will probably be acted upon next
week, will be cut from 7 to 4 per cent.
Trading during the brief two hours was
as pointless a could Well be Imagined.
A disquieting feature was the recurrence
or serious labor riots In one of the Massa
chusetta mill towns.
On the other side of the account were
the reports of the mercantile agencies
stating that trade conditions as a whole
are better than appear on the surface, a
further large shrinkage In th idle car
surplus snd the report or the New York
state banking department showing that
the savings banka hare larger aggregate
resources than at any previoua time In
their history, the Increase being no leas
than S OorViXe,
The bank statement showed an actual
loan Increase of R. ", against an aver
age Increase of Jn.lSUiXl. The actual cash
l. was k.M7.oai, a figure well In excess
of all estimates. Actual reserve de
creased about tXAMinal, which, together
with the previous week smaller losl, re
duces the actual exoes reserve to a little
more than iai..(io.
Th bond market wa dull and without
especial feature. Total sales, par value.
SI 007 oon. United State I, coupon, de
clined l and the 4 advanced aa much on
call during the week.

CATTLE Receipt today eomriated of
lea than 100 head, there not being enough
on sale to make a market, which la the
usual situation on a Saturday. For th
week receipt rail a lllti short ot Hu
heed, being about the earns as (or th
twj week previous and not much differ
ent from the corresponding period a year
ago. Th quality of th catti throughout
ttio week ha been poor, good kilter being
th exception, while the bit; bulk of th
arrival naa oonalalad at enort-iea ana
Inferior beeves, wtlh a liberal sprinkling
of cow stuff and stockors.
I'ndar tbe Influence ef liberal receipt
nd a non too ctlv demand price
during th early part ot the week broke
quite sharply, th market on Monday and
Tueaday being decidedly lower, since that
lime there ha been a little reaction under
the Influence of omwhit iigntar run,
but Hill at th clot beet steer ant In
most case tOblte lower than last week's
clone. Right daatrehl killer, that la,
omathlng right tool, might not show
that much loa.
I an and heifer aim declined iherply
t th beginning of th weak and whit
th but grade might not be tbat much
lowr, th market on the greater portion
of th butcher atock arriving U saioly
IftOUa lower than last week elo. A
feature of th trad thl week tu th
harp break In bull ana weni cairsw. at
th ClOS Ot in We It IB awrr iieiu
in v.t in, bull good enough to
bring better than K M or veal salves that
will bring over 17-00.
Feeding cattle of desirable quality have
been In light upply all week and they
have shown conipranviy nine mam,
ueing now about steady with last week s
close. Common feedera ana ugnt sioca
oat tie have been rather alow al all week.
but that lo was in MtMuuva ot ua

HOtW-Kor a Saturday receipts of hog
were heavy enough to prompt effort at
cheapening coat, but ald from a low
tart, th condition of trade occasioned
mile romnlaint In selling circles. Early
nates ruled stfioo lower, a d eel in that
waa followed by prompt recovery. Mld
teaslon prices averaged about a nickel
lower and the closing market had Im
neoved so much that value war gener
ally quoted steady with I hoe In fore
yesterday. Bulk of offering want Into
killing droves at llguiew ni euvunu wc
lower, cost of two or three early strings
hnwlna this dociln.
Yard estimate called for over 10100
bog. Ilttl butcher and bacon walghia
proving the general rile. Th demand
from all quarter had plenty of ton and
volume, especially during th lata mar
ket, and clearance wa mad In very
good season. Hhlppsr and apeoulatori
furnt'hed very fair eupport throughout,
buying about 10 per cent of th total
supply.
Beat heavy hogs on sal brought tt.ll,
aa compared with th same top yester
day, while bacon weights ranged from
Sobt downward. Butcher cleared largely
at o.lew'0S, quality and weight deter
mining the price.
During th week receipt have been
fairly liberal and vary well distributed,
but the total still shuw a big decrease
from last week', record run. The demand
en moat daya ha been broad but rather
quiet, prices ruling easier aa th reeult
ef poor competition. Current value
avrge about a nickel lower when com
pared with those reported a week ago.

During the week th trade has been
